What are you learning so far in the course?

So far in this course I have learned a lot about the way technology has been used and underused in today's school system. Technology is part of our every day lives. It's called the digital age for a reason isn't it? So why are so many schools so against integrating technology into their education system? Well it seems like there's just a stigma against it for being a "distraction" or even a way of controlling the students.

I've now learned how to make a padlet which I had never heard of before but I really like it and can see myself using it in my own classroom one day. We are currently learning how to make a video hook about a topic to get our students interested in it which is really exciting.

When we watched the Digital Nation video it gave a lot of insight on how Technology or the lack of it was impacting teaching and learning. It showed how a school that was full of violence and was run down was turned around by implementing the use of technology in the classrooms. The students were able to focus on their work better and have fun while the teachers were able to find new creative ways to keep the students engaged and interested in what they were learning.

Using technology in an educational setting teaches students to use technology / the internet in a healthy and safe way. Not only this but it associates technology with being an educational tool rather than just a "distraction". In the Digital Nation video the family from Brooklyn had a son in middle school that required him to have a laptop for his schoolwork. He was able to do work easily at school and at home and also learned skills like writing blog posts which also enabled the students to give each other feedback.

The Principal of the school that turned itself around by implementing technology made a good point in his reasoning for doing so. He said "We could argue all we want about kids needing to stay in their seat and be quiet, but I don't know of any jobs that are going to exist, that even exist now, that require kids to stay in their seats and be quiet. Kids are going to need to be fluent in technology. They're going to need to be excellent at communication. They're going to need to be problem solvers. That's just the way the world is now". This statement really stuck with me because it's so true and I've witness the benefits of using technology in my own education.

The largest argument against technology is that it can pose as a distraction. However, many schools have found ways to block certain websites to help discourage this.
Aside from it being a distraction it does open up the possibility of cheating on homework and in class assignments.

One of my main concerns with technology is that not every student has equal access to technology at home. School is supposed to be a place where students have equal opportunities to learn. we need to be able to provide the technology for the students or have assistance opportunities for those who can't afford a computer so that the benefits of using technology in our education system can be felt equally by all the students.
