DNA, also known as Deoxyribonucleic Acid are two long strands in the form of a double helix that contains our genetic code. Our genetic code are essentially a set of rules used by our cells to convert the instructions in DNA to what we need in life and proteins. DNA is made up of nucleotides that are the building blocks of DNA and made up of phosphates, sugars, and nitrogen bases. These nitrogen bases have rules called Chargaff's rules, where A=T (Adenine = Thymine) and C=G (Cytosine = Guanine). Connecting these bases are hydrogen bonds.

To begin, we put the strawberry in the Ziplock bag and began mush the strawberry for a few minutes to break open the cells. Then we mixed the strawberry mush with salty/soapy solution, mushing it again for 2 minutes to break up proteins and dissolve cell membranes. Continuing that, we then filter strawberry slurry through cheesecloth to separate the components of the cell. Lastly, we pour the mush into the test tube half way then begin to add ethanol to filtered extract to precipitate DNA from the solution.

Strawberry DNA Extraction Lab : Extension Questions

To sum up our strawberry lab, we crushed the strawberry in a Ziplock bag, added soapy solution and crushed again. Then we added the mushy substance to an apparatus that filtered the strawberry chunks versus the actual juice. With that juice, we added it to a test tube then added the ethanol, where the DNA slowly came up into the ethanol. I learned that plants and veggies, like all other living things, have DNA. If I did this experiment again, I'd probably change out the cheese cloth because it was kind of hard for the mushy juice to separate from the strawberry chunks. Now that I know you can extract DNA from a strawberry, I'd wanna see how the DNA looks under a microscope, whether it looks the same as ours or not. Two traits expressed in a strawberry are color and size.
