Video Drama Project started off by auditioning and have an interview with the producer and director for the roles we were interested in. My top 2 choices were performer and props. I auditioned for the role of Lilly because I liked her character description and felt like I could relate. I got the role of Lilly which I was happy about and I was excited to start the filming process. My crew role is props and set dressing which I haven't done before some I am looking forward to learning new skills.

Tuesday 21st November

Today the full cast and crew had to be in for a full read through of the script. After the read through we started the blocking of the scenes process. The first scene we blocked was scene 4 which is all the house mates chatting together and hearing the banging noise from next door. It was fun starting to bring the characters to life and being able to understand the script better. After this session I went home and wrote a character bio for my character Lilly.

Character Bio

My Character Lilly is grumpy and sarcastic. She thinks she is always right even when she is wrong but she would never admit that. Lilly can act like she doesn't care but underneath that persona she is kind and caring. Lilly is sarcastic and jokes around most of the time but when it gets serious she knows how to use her intelligence to take charge and make decisions that benefit everyone.

Character Backstory

I have thought about what I think Lilly's backstory is and her relationships with the other house mates.

I have decided that Lilly, Macy and Ester lived together first before Lucas moved in. Macy had met Lucas in a university society and then introduced him to the other girls. They all got along with him but once Macy suggested he moved him with them Lilly wasn't so happy. Lilly liked how it was when the 3 of them lived together and knew that Lucas had a big personality which can be annoying. In the house there is some tension between Lilly and Lucas and she can be grumpy and snappy with him.

I thought about what course Lilly would do and decided on biology to show her intelligence. I also thought about Lilly’s home life, which I imagined to be relatively normal. She has an older brother who can sometimes be intimidating towards her and often makes jokes at her expense. This is part of the reason why she looks down on Lucas. This could also contribute as to why she is trying to keep a up a strong, tough persona.

Ocean and I started working on props together by breaking down the script and seeing what props had already been written in for example the rope that ties Kieran and Sally up. We then decided how we wanted the living room to look in scene 4. We have decided to make it look cosy with fairy lights and pictures up, but we also want it to still look like a student house, so we will have cups and crisp packets on the coffee table to make it look more untidy.

I put together different outfit choices for Grace to choose from for my character. I think my Character Lilly would care about what she looked like so I wanted outfits that looked put together.

27th November- 1st day of filming

Today was our first day of filming which I was excited for. We were filming a scene I was acting in so I made sure I knew my lines and focused on how I wanted to portray my Character. A technique I like to use when acting is Uta Hagen's 9 questions, I find that this helps me get into my character and think about my surroundings.

This scene had many props so last night I made sure I had already packed my bag of props and double checked everything I needed to bring. When we were at the filming location dressing the set was fun because we got to bring our vision to life. One thing that was a bit of a struggle was making sure everything stayed in the same place for continuity.

30th November/ 1st December filming

The scenes we filmed these days were outside, it was very cold which made some people stressed and caused people to talk over one another. The temperature was -3 which wasn't pleasant to be standing outside in and I think an improvement would be for some decisions to have been decided earlier so we didn’t have to stand waiting and we could have been instructed with what to do. However, we managed to get the shots outside filmed and stuck to the schedule.

At home I did some research on props and found out that “A hand prop is a prop handled by an actor.”

“Film and television also differentiate hand props into hero props, background props, and stunt props. Hero props are meant to be filmed up-close. Background props are props that will only be seen in the background.”

On one of the last days of filming we arrived on set at 10 but only managed to start filming at 12. Part of this was due to only 1 person on hair and makeup because one of the other members had gone on holiday and the other one barely turned up. Once hair and makeup was done there was lots of chatting so we weren't getting started. Since we started late this pushed lunch back still around half 2 which was getting people annoyed because we were all hungry but having to carry on filming for continuity purposes. I think if there was more organization and if members of the group turned up we wouldn't have been in this situation on that day. We ran over the schedule that day but we were all determined to get the scenes we planned to film all complete.
