The Woodstock Musical Festival was originally staged in Bethel New York in 1969, but due to its extensive turnout and popularity, it returned about every ten years after that, staged again in 1979, 1989, 1994, 1999 and most recently in 2009. In 1969, "the Woodstock Music & Art Fair took place on a dairy farm in Bethel, NY. Over half a million people came to a 600-acre farm to hear 32 acts (leading and emerging performers of the time) play over the course of four days (August 15-18). Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, the Who, Janis Joplin and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young were among the line-up" ("About | Woodstock"). Woodstock, occurring in the late 60's, gathered many people to one central area, creating a vibe that everone was one being in those four days full of music.

After selling approximately 186,000 tickets, expecting no more than 200,000 people to show up, Max Yasgur thought that the musical festival occurring on his 600 acre dairy farm would be well worth the fat sum he was paid. Turned out he was wrong. By the Thursday prior to the festival starting, there were already "over 50,000 fans ready for the weekend’s excitement" ("The Sixties | Bethel Woods Center for The Arts").

In many ways, Woodstock was like the marijuana of music festivals. It opened the door for future festivals and their drug population. There was a plethora of drugs present at Woodstock, mainly marijuana, acid, and LSD. Compared to current day music festivals, like Coachella in California and Boston Calling in Massachusetts, Woodstock was nothing. Only two people died during the four days spent at Woodstock, one via a drug overdoes and the other by a tractor accident. At last year's Coachella Festival, "a total of 93 arrests were made during the first weekend...56 related to illegal narcotics...One man also died during the weekend about 4 miles northeast outside of the festival...after being struck by a Union Pacific Train at about 3:05 a.m. April 11" (Wong). Needless to say. Woodstock left an open door for later music festivals to follow in its footsteps, let alone step it up with the illegal substances.

Being a festival, Woodstock had quite the large line up for its debut year. Artists included Jimi Hendrix (below), Bert Sommer, Joan Baez, Santana, and The Grateful Dead, among many others spanning three days of performances. Each artist played about 10 of their songs, often having long and freestyle mixes of their songs, depending on the energy of the crowd. Every artist present at Woodstock fell under the categories of music popular amongst the hippie cculture, needless to say the music played for 72 hours straight wasn't popular with the anti-hippie surrounding people. However, the show went right on as loud and as planned as it was.

Fact: "There was no suitable site in Woodstock, so organisers opted for Wallkill, 40 miles away. But residents blocked their plans, so dairy farmer Max Yasgur stepped in to offer his alfalfa field, in the neighbouring hamlet of Bethel. A deal was struck for $75,000" (MailOnline).

Although its revival in 1999 was expected to be good, modern society had proved to provide a very different atmosphere than the late 60's had so graciously given in the original Woodstock. In the article "19 Worst Things About Woodstock '99," it is said that "the Rome, New York festival earned the infamous distinction of 'the day the Nineties died'" (Kreps). Some things are just better the first time.

Their song, "My Generation," is the epitome of what it meant to be young and part of the hippie culture in the 60's, and in many ways led to more music that tailored to the views of the more "radical" youth in all centuries.

As a result of Woodstock and its days of "sex, drugs, and rock & roll," many people went home with a grander hippie-esque feeling, while others became more bitter about their more loose neighbors. After countless hours filled with loud music, drugs and energy, Woodstock came to a close, only to return ten years later, and multiple times after that. Woodstock and its corresponding culture left the country with a decision as it found itself entering a new decade--accept what you can't change or keep fighting a battle that can't be won. Judging by the position society is in now, it is clear that America chose to let it go and roll with the fact that a large new group of people was on the rise in its free walls, one that would combat and continuously go against everything the old traditions offered. The hippie culture proved to be one that lasted, but it definitely wasn't always peaceful and happy. After Woodstock, hippies and their ideas gradually and inadvertently brought in new arguments, especially circulating around the topic of drug usage. Today, this debate is still happening as strong as ever, and the crisis of drug usage seems to only be growing. What started with recreational use of marijuana has rapidly shifted into the new age of party, date-rape, and mixed drugs, all of which are responsible for a good chunk of the deaths in America today. At Woodstock, drugs flew under the radar for the most part and weren't minded. However, at today's music festivals like the highly popular yearly Coachella Music Festival in California, more and more drug usage is popping up, especially in the hospitals that abusers end up in after these so-called "ragers." Although it can be easily linked directly to how reckless each generation has progressively gotten, or how "the times are changing," it is still a great problem, and today's fun activities like musical festivals just aren't as safe as they once were, like Woodstock was. No wonder so many people want to go back to the age of rock and roll and no cares except for which beach to go to that day.
