"To hang on from day to day and from week to week, spinning out a present that had no future, seemed an unconquerable instinct, just as one's lungs will always draw the next breath so long as there is air available" (126)

Both Winston and Julia have come to the realization that their relationship will not end happily ever after. They will be discovered and captured, forced to confess and be vaporized apart from one another. This subjection to torture though does not scare them as rather than thinking about their inescapable and uncontrollable future, they continue their love affair.

Orwell compares Winston and Julia's surprising love affair to a very commonly understood body function (breathing), providing better understanding for his audience. Winston and Julia have the option of ending their love affair at any time and thus not be caught and live out their lives alone. However, they feel they can not break their love affair because of the connection they have. They are in complete of lack of control of any part of their lives as Big Brother controls their past and future and instinct controls their present.

While they may have changed names and may have been bigger or smaller, but the class structure system has never changed despite revolutions, rebellions, and societal shifts.

According to Emmanuel Goldstein, even in the ancient Babylonian and Egyptian empires, class structure existed. Even in Communist Russia following Vladimir Lenin's February and November Revolutions and Stalin's Purges, class structure prevailed despite the supposed Communist society of equal comrades. Even in Oceania and Airstrip One, "the High, the Middle, and the Low" still exist as the proles (whose backs supposedly the state and the Party are built upon) are treated as inferior by the Inner and Outer Party members. Despite their large numbers, the proles' stupidity and degradation has put them in a weak and subservient position to the Party members.

This pulls Winston further away from the connection he had in Oceania and more towards a 21st century man. It's this crazy little thing called love.

Analysis

question: Ask about anything that puzzles
you. For example: Could this really happen?
Are people really this…
polite/mean/romantic/religious/violent, etc?
What does this word mean the way it is used
here? Why did the author choose this way to
describe the voice/character/action, etc?
Predict: Answer these questions: What will
happen next? Where do you think this is
leading? Who is the killer? Will these
characters fall in love/end up together?
Clarify: What do you understand now that you
did not get previously? Have your questions
been answered? Were your predictions
accurate? Do you understand something you
didn’t before?
Connect: Text-to-Text, Text-to-Self, Text-to-
World.
Evaluate: Give your opinion of the
character/event/word/sentence/message. What
makes this passage effective? What do you like
or dislike about it?
