Josie has parents who are very busy and when she entered the therapists room she saw a glove and this sparked feelings of being unwanted and not feeling like a priority. She went into shut down as normally the therapist feels like a safe person/space where the feelings she feels at home aren’t triggered but seeing the glove made her realise the therapist (similar to her parents) has other people and things that are also a priority not just Josie and this may have triggered that feeling of unwanted was.

It was also interesting to see how the therapist experienced countertransference as she was feeling unsure about what to do and felt a feeling of rejection from Josie but she had to talk herself through it to not react in a way that shows her feelings. She was constantly trying to notice her feelings in attempt to not display them.

Transference occurs when people unconsciously respond to others in their life as if they are a figure from their past. It can be from both positive and negative connections made, and makes a connection from the inner world and perceptions to the external one.

Before losing her mother, Carol and her’s relationship was tumultuous, regularly changing in security. After this loss, Carol’s transference of this relationship can be seen in her interactions with her friends, pushing them away in fear of them turning into enemies, or abandoning her in the way that she feels her mother did.

The loss of her mother also impacted her self worth, giving her the belief that “she was not good enough to stay alive for”. This was also seen in her interactions with her friends, as she lashed out at any teasing from her friends, transferring that internal feeling of worthlessness into external responses.

Transference - the way a person sees & reacts, how they react to the world based on what’s happened to them, transferring feelings onto others

Carol is protecting figures from the past onto her present relationships by being actively in fight or flight mode, she has anger as a means to release. Even though she is unconsciously doing so, this is how her body has innately chosen to react, she is trying to regain control even though she feels that she doesn’t fundamentally have that
