For this event, I will be writing an outline of the history and context behind it, and possibly putting it in a pamphlet, to be handed out at the event. This will include things like milestones like the Stonewall riots, changes in legislature, legalizing same sex marriage. I will also define terms that some people may be unfamiliar with. The point of my role is to help people understand why we are holding this event. My role will require a lot of research. I will be compiling some of this research into a pamphlet to be handed out during the event.

In my decision making stage, I have conducted some research on why I chose leaflets and posters instead of other similar advertising methods such as pamphlets, flyers or brochures. In contrast to the other three mentioned, leaflets and posters combined are more appropriate to be used in this event because:

Posters
Posters are a low-cost and effective way to share a message. The advertising method is highly useful and informative if designed well and placed correctly.

Leaflets

Leaflets have a purpose for promoting particular events, which in this case is the LGBTQ Pride Out event. They are very accessible in regards to advertising events, as they can be distributed easily such as into newspapers, magazines and the mail box.

On the other hand, brochures and pamphlets are more specified in promoting businesses or organisations. Flyers, however, act as a smaller sized version of posters. In this case, posters are more appropriate, as the larger size will more likely visually attract the target audience.

The concept for the promotional video is based around different members of the LGBTQ community and their journey to the event itself. The three main characters in the promo are led out of their current space (bedroom, cafe, library, music store) by arrows that are coloured by the colours of the flag that represents where they sit in the LGBTQ spectrum. These arrows are sketch like and act as animation within the scenes, with sketch like lines also wrapping around city buildings and random objects. Their faces are partially covered by a lined face, and as they reach the event all the arrows merge and there is an explosion of colour and they find that everyone at the event also has the same lined face, symbolising the unity of the LGBTQ community. The actual meaning of the lined face is up to interpretation, one of which is that the continued curvature of the lines symbolize fluidity, which in turn acts as a symbol for the LGBTQ community sexuality and gender is a notion that is fluid and not set in stone.

This will allow viewers to fully take in the images that they are seeing and view it as a whole image, instead of a fragmented image that is broken up by sound.

I am also really drawn to the cinematography seen in the film, as focus is placed on warm lighting, pastel colours muted focus, all of which contributes to the tone of the film which ultimately creates an atmosphere of youthfulness and inspiration, which is exactly what I would aim for my film to be as it centers around and caters to the LGBTQ youth.

Video Interview Concept: Mood Board

I created this mood board in order to illustrate the atmosphere and aesthetic that I would be aiming to encapsulate within the film. Personally, these images perfectly capture the dream-like quality of youth and empowerment and also illustrate the style of cinematography that I would be hoping to capture through lighting and colour. Many of the photographs are captured on film, which I personally love to use because of the raw quality that it creates, so I would try to shoot in a similar way using a digital camera.

I was drawn to pastel colours as often pastels evoke openness and relaxation, which would position the audience to feel open minded whilst watching. The symbolic meaning of the main colours in the colour scheme are:

Blue - trust, creativity, contemplation

Yellow - joy, inspiration, power, confidence

Pink - love, romance, nurture

Will, Trang and I are the ones in charge of the visual marketing products being contributed into the Pride Out planning. Thus, we needed a colour palette that will fit and unite in all our design.

I chose to accumulate five different colour palettes of the rainbow flag, as this represents the LGBTQ movement. We then picked a palette out of the five to move on with our designs. By doing this, we have a range of colours to work with, allowing us to share similarities in the final product. This is helpful in the design management, as it can be easily linked to one event (Pride event). Whereas, if all the design and art principles were to differ in the products, the target audience may not associate the products to be as one. This also doesn't help in portraying the message of our teamwork, as it could be conveyed as disorganised.

The flag below is our chosen palette, whereby we can only change the transparency levels. The reason for this is that it is the only change that does not make a large difference, whilst changing the tonal and saturation levels will.

This lead to researching statistics that depicted the highest supporters of the LGBTQ community.

In a website by the Australian Marriage Equality Organisation, survey results on the Australian public and their opinion on marriage equality were shown. The result was that 81% of young adults aged 18-24 years old showed their support.

I think it is important to know who the main audience will be in the event, as it guides designers in the construction aspect.

Firstly, it is important that the students around the school are aware of the Pride Out in Perth event, so I would use the posters that Alex have made and post it around the school. I would also make my own poster to let the students know about the class that I will be running about the LGBTQ community, as well as the event itself. I could also make an announcement during the assembly for all year groups.

Another strategy that I think would be effective in encouraging other students would be to bring in free food and drinks to the class, not only as a 'thank you' for those who participates, but it is also a good way to bring the school community together.

My focus will be the more “formal” part of the event; namely, devising a programme of speakers and performances for the main stage. The intention is to have a programme of events on a stage to “launch” the event, with a welcome from the organisers and an introductory speech from an esteemed guest. The events would include speeches and creative performances (music, spoken word poetry, and so forth) and include a number of scheduled breaks. Ideally, the stage would attract a large audience for the introductory events, and then allow attendees to wander back and forth as they like between the stage and other attractions. My first task will be to scout a location for the main stage. As I am a journalism student, I will conduct some research into the biographies of prospective speakers and write them up for publication in a program (which I will also draft). I will write a brief welcome for the MC.

As the event will take place at the Perth Cultural Centre, the main stage will be located at the James Street Amphitheatre. According to the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority website, the amphitheatre has a capacity of around 1,000 persons, and includes an LED screen and ground-level stage fitted with power supplies. The LED screen will be used to show Tallulah’s video content, as well as any supporting graphics provided by the scheduled speakers and performers.

In the course of organising the event, there are a number of considerations we should keep in mind.

Emergency access to the amphitheatre must not be obstructed. This should be considered when planning where to place any staging, equipment or seating, as well as when planning how to direct pedestrian traffic.

The volume of the event must be controlled so not to disturb nearby businesses and institutions (such as the Museum of Perth).

The weather should be monitored and any equipment secured, accounting for the possibility of strong winds.

Further information can be found at the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority webpage:

http://assets.mra.wa.gov.au/production/b2bf01a5e10de2e571774967df439b21/912x547_q85_thumbnail/james-st-amphitheatre.jpg

In this rough copy, I decided to use side view photographs of my group members, including myself, to represent our event. Here I used both female and male group members on each side of the canvas facing each other. I did this to display the message that we are not limited to our sexuality. In addition to the design, I incorporated a white linear sketch over the top, which makes the figures in the poster unrecognisable as the stereotyped female or male. This goes to say that our physical characteristics does not necessarily portray our gender.

In regards to design such as the colours and font used, I included the rainbow at the top as it is eye-catching and is the main symbol for the LGBTQ community. I included the red on the bottom with the heavy bold text to attract attention.

Good morning! Welcome to the first annual Pride: Out In Perth festival. It’s wonderful to see such strong community support— thank you all for coming! We’ve got an exciting line-up today. Before we get started, I would like to respectfully acknowledge the past and present traditional custodians of this land on which we are meeting, the Noongar people. It is a privilege to be standing on Noongar country. I also acknowledge the contributions of Aboriginal Australians and non-Aboriginal Australians to the education of all children and people in this country we all live in and share together – Australia.

We really have something for everyone today. You’ll be hearing from some of the most talented, inspiring and trailblazing LGBTIQ voices from Perth and abroad, as we celebrate our city’s diverse community. This morning, we have the privilege of hosting the talented beat poet Melanie Knight, and I will be conducting a Q&A session with the editor of Perth’s LGBTIQ news bulletin OUTinPerth. But first, I’m honoured to welcome our Premier, the Honourable Colin Barnett, to kick things off.

Acknowledgement of country: http://www.det.wa.edu.au/policies/detcms/policy-planning-and-accountability/policies-framework/guidelines/welcome-to-country-and-acknowledgement-of-country-protocols.en

History of the flag

The flag is important for this event, not only because it represents the entire community and their pride, but also the symbolism is being used for the different stalls, as Trang will discuss.
The flag has developed through out history from being an 8 striped rainbow in 1978 It was designed by Gilbert Baker, with the colours pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for serenity with nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony and violet for spirit. These colours and symbols are specifically important for the LGBTQ+ community as these factors are what queer people have to be proud of.
In late 1978, the flag was agreed to drop the hot pink colour because the manufacturing required was too difficult. It resulted in a 7 striped flag.
Soon again, the flag dropped another colour, the turquoise as it was also to tough to fabricate. This 6 striped flag is what is now the current and common pride flag.

The Stonewall riots were riots on the 28th of June in 1969 in New York. The LGBTQ+ community had enough of their oppression. The pivotal moment, Marsha P. Johnson (a black trans woman) threw a bric, and many others joined in until it became a riot. The effects of those revolts sent shock waves into the discourse of civil rights, and brought to the forefront the treatment of queer people.

I thought it would be interesting to look into queer film and similar medias as they are very useful for representation. The reason that I wanted to look into LGBTQ+ movies was to show that there are queer people in the world and in the entertainment industry. I found a blog, lgbtcinema.tumblr.com, that shares lgbtq+ films and I thought it might be good for the event to do a movie showing, but due to the lateness of this idea there wasnt enough time to discuss it with the group.

Before beginning our presentation, we would like to acknowledge the traditional land ownders, the Noongar people. We acknowledge their strength and resilience and ownership of the land we gather on today.
Our event is a pride community fair event, called Pride: Out in Perth. We decided to focus on the LGBTQ+ community and celebrate the diversity of sexuality and gender in Perth. It will be a day event running in Febuary and will be held at the Perth Cultural Centre. We wish to utilise our abilities and disciplines to spread awareness and create a more open community. The definition of community we chose to work with was more than a physical connection between people but a deeper connection between people; the LGBTQ+ community. We worked the physical aspect of the Perth community and brought it together and invited Perth into the LGBTQ+ community
