These are some of the research I did to get some background knowledge about the LGBTQ community and the national school curriculum, and how many schools, particularly in Australia tend to ignore and skip teaching about the LGBTQ community. In contrast to the other three mentioned, leaflets and posters combined are more appropriate to be used in this event because:

Posters
Posters are a low-cost and effective way to share a message. The advertising method is highly useful and informative if designed well and placed correctly.

Leaflets

Leaflets have a purpose for promoting particular events, which in this case is the LGBTQ Pride Out event. They are very accessible in regards to advertising events, as they can be distributed easily such as into newspapers, magazines and the mail box.

On the other hand, brochures and pamphlets are more specified in promoting businesses or organisations. Flyers, however, act as a smaller sized version of posters. In this case, posters are more appropriate, as the larger size will more likely visually attract the target audience.

The three main characters in the promo are led out of their current space (bedroom, cafe, library, music store) by arrows that are coloured by the colours of the flag that represents where they sit in the LGBTQ spectrum. These arrows are sketch like and act as animation within the scenes, with sketch like lines also wrapping around city buildings and random objects. Their faces are partially covered by a lined face, and as they reach the event all the arrows merge and there is an explosion of colour and they find that everyone at the event also has the same lined face, symbolising the unity of the LGBTQ community. The actual meaning of the lined face is up to interpretation, one of which is that the continued curvature of the lines symbolize fluidity, which in turn acts as a symbol for the LGBTQ community sexuality and gender is a notion that is fluid and not set in stone.

Personally, these images perfectly capture the dream-like quality of youth and empowerment and also illustrate the style of cinematography that I would be hoping to capture through lighting and colour. Many of the photographs are captured on film, which I personally love to use because of the raw quality that it creates, so I would try to shoot in a similar way using a digital camera.

I was drawn to pastel colours as often pastels evoke openness and relaxation, which would position the audience to feel open minded whilst watching. The symbolic meaning of the main colours in the colour scheme are:

I have done some research on context behind the LGBTQ+ community, and will look more into more significant moments for gay rights similar to the Stonewall riots. I looked into the history and development of same sex marriage, the meaning behind the recognisable gay rainbow flag, and the many recognised terms related to the community. This was just my first research and I only skim read, but it will help lead further readings as well.

Thus, we needed a colour palette that will fit and unite in all our design.

I chose to accumulate five different colour palettes of the rainbow flag, as this represents the LGBTQ movement. We then picked a palette out of the five to move on with our designs. By doing this, we have a range of colours to work with, allowing us to share similarities in the final product. This is helpful in the design management, as it can be easily linked to one event (Pride event). In the course of organising the event, there are a number of considerations we should keep in mind.

Emergency access to the amphitheatre must not be obstructed. This should be considered when planning where to place any staging, equipment or seating, as well as when planning how to direct pedestrian traffic.
The volume of the event must be controlled so not to disturb nearby businesses and institutions (such as the Museum of Perth).
The weather should be monitored and any equipment secured, accounting for the possibility of strong winds.

Welcome to the first annual Pride: Out In Perth festival. It’s wonderful to see such strong community support— thank you all for coming! We’ve got an exciting line-up today. Before we get started, I would like to respectfully acknowledge the past and present traditional custodians of this land on which we are meeting, the Noongar people. It is a privilege to be standing on Noongar country. I also acknowledge the contributions of Aboriginal Australians and non-Aboriginal Australians to the education of all children and people in this country we all live in and share together – Australia.

We really have something for everyone today. You’ll be hearing from some of the most talented, inspiring and trailblazing LGBTIQ voices from Perth and abroad, as we celebrate our city’s diverse community. This morning, we have the privilege of hosting the talented beat poet Melanie Knight, and I will be conducting a Q&A session with the editor of Perth’s LGBTIQ news bulletin OUTinPerth. But first, I’m honoured to welcome our Premier, the Honourable Colin Barnett, to kick things off.

The flag has developed through out history from being an 8 striped rainbow in 1978 It was designed by Gilbert Baker, with the colours pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sun, green for serenity with nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony and violet for spirit. These colours and symbols are specifically important for the LGBTQ+ community as these factors are what queer people have to be proud of.
In late 1978, the flag was agreed to drop the hot pink colour because the manufacturing required was too difficult. It resulted in a 7 striped flag.
Soon again, the flag dropped another colour, the turquoise as it was also to tough to fabricate. Pansexual: A person who experiences attraction despite gender
Intersex: A person whose physical body does not allign with the usual binary of male and female
Asexual: A person who does not experience sexual attraction
Queer: A person who identifies as a part of the community. He just released a cooking recipe book. Considering the colour, it's quite relevant to the LGBTQ flag hues.

The Rounded shapes also give it a funky, yet simple design that's eye catching.

The negative space and the limited information (font, text) allows the viewer to take in the information quickly and easily.

The negative space and saturated, bright hues combined together give an inviting space in contrast to a dull leaflet full of paragraphs.
