Odysseus and his men attempt to navigate themselves to their homes, but encounter many inconveniences. First, his men raided the Island of Cicones: "Plunder we took, and we enslaved the women, to make division, equal shares to all - but on the spot I told them: ‘Back and quickly! Out to sea again!’” (9.45-48) After such, the shipmen were faced with Lotus Eaters, which were avoided because those who had ate the lotuses had no longer desired to go home. Then came about the Cyclops: "Cyclops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaca!"(9.361-364) Shortly after, Odysseus meets an enchantress named Circe that advises him to go to the Land of The Dead, where Tiresias foretells his prophecy.

After Odysseus meets with Tiresias, he is warned about the Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis - monsters that threaten his and his crew's safety. Odysseus must make the choice of losing all his men to Charybdis, or six to Scylla: "No, hug the cliff of Scylla, take your ship on a racing stroke. Better to mourn six men than lose them all, and the ship, too" (12.68-70). Odysseus decides to sacrifice six of his men, as instructed by Circe. After doing so, they reach Thrinacia, island of the cattle god. Odysseus had hoped to have avoided the island, as he was told that his men would kill the cattle and anger Helios. Odysseus warns his crew: "‘Old shipmates, our stores are in the ship’s hold, food and drink; the cattle here are not for our provision, or we pay dearly for it. Fierce the god is who cherishes these heifers and these sheep: Helios; and no man avoids his eye’" (12.853-856). While Odysseus takes a nap, Eurylochus defies his orders and convinces the other shipmates to kill off the cattle to eat and sacrifice the highest quality to Helios. Helios finds out about this and has the men punished and shipwrecked, all except Odysseus who manages to wash up on the shores of Calypso's island.

Odysseus, without a ship or crew, is stranded on Sicily, where Calypso resides. Odysseus longs for home and attempts at building ships to escape, but Calypso doesn't allow such and keeps him for 7 years. That is up until Athena brings it to Zeus' attention: "'Meanwhile he lives and grieves upon that island in thralldom to the nymph; he cannot stir, cannot fare homeward, for no ship is left with him, fitted with oars - no crewmen or companions to pull him on the broad back of the sea'" (5.15-19). Zeus, unable to deny the wishes of his daughter, sends Hermes to deliver a message to Calypso to release Odysseus. Hermes goes on to tell Calypso she must allow him to leave and so Odysseus finds himself meeting Alkinoos, where he tells Alkinoos the adventures he experienced up until that point in time.

Athena conjures a mist to protect Odysseus while he slumbers. When he awakes, he is unable to recognize his home: "Meanwhile, on his island, his father’s shore, that kingly man, Odysseus, awoke, but could not tell what land it was after so many years away; moreover, Pallas Athena, Zeus’s daughter, poured a grey mist all around him, hiding him from common sight—for she had things to tell him and wished no one to know him, wife or townsmen, before the suitors paid up for their crimes" (13.218-226).

Now that Odysseus is awake, Athena explains the conditions Ithaca is in, "Grey-eyed Athena was the first to speak, saying: 'Son of Laërtês and the gods of old, Odysseus, master of land ways and sea ways, put your mind on a way to reach and strike a crowd of brazen upstarts. Three long years they have played master in your house: three years trying to win your lovely lady, making gifts as though betrothed. And she? Forever grieving for you, missing your return, she has allowed them all to hope, and sent messengers with promises to each— though her true thoughts are fixed elsewhere'" (13.433-445). Fearful, Odysseus begins to think of the fate of Agamemnon. Athena assures him that he can disguise himself to see who in his kingdom still remains loyal to him: "'Now, for a while, I shall transform you; not a soul will know you, the clear skin of your arms and legs shriveled, your chestnut hair all gone, your body dressed in sacking that a man would gag to see, and the two eyes, that were so brilliant, dirtied— contemptible, you shall seem to your enemies, as to the wife and son you left behind'" (13.464-470).
