An effective vision and strategic plan to further educational equity, while maintaining broad ideas about the why of the work, also needs to center around more clearly articulated ideas about what educational equity looks like. I think a lot of times our discussions center more around what it feels like, but for the vision to be effective, we need to have specific shared understandings of what it is we're looking for. For example, this should include specifications related to curriculum (cultural relevance, meaningful, logical and approachable), school culture or practices (expectations and rules, ways behavior and discipline is addressed, how students and students champions are able to make their voices heard), and systemic/policy issues (for example, issues related to school funding, racism, social services, etc.). To some extent, I think an effective vision should be able to be narrated like a story. An effective vision also needs to be realistic and context-bound, meaning that we need to be equally explicit about the barriers to achieving those specific ideal outcomes -- we need to be able to clearly articulate what practices, policies, mindsets, habits, individuals, etc. are currently standing in the way of educational equity and how, at least in general terms, we can overcome each one.

An effective strategic plan first needs to be based in a solidly articulated, context-informed vision for the future we are working towards. Once that is achieved, it becomes much more easier to break the vision into smaller action steps. If one facet of our vision for educational equity is close partnership between schools and student champions, we can then begin crafting a strategic plan that builds towards that goal -- for example, one step of the strategic plan could be to host a parent engagement event in the first month of school. In addition to specific action steps, an effective strategic plan also needs means of measurement, reflection, and revising built in. If another facet of our vision is practicing culturally relevant pedagogy, we need to specify what that looks like, determine ways of quantifying and qualifying its use, and plan to analyze those metrics regularly and adapt the plan if things aren't progressing as initially expected or if additional barriers arise. To the extent that much larger changes outside of our control are implicated in our vision (and in our work they certainly are), specificity and action steps are still essential, but this work must be significantly more reflective, iterative, and flexible.

I think an effective vision and strategic plan also need to balance optimism and practicality. Obviously we all want education equity, like, yesterday, but that isn't a realistic vision to have given the context of the problem we are trying to solve. We should be bold and innovative in imagining and articulating what educational equity should be, but to make a realistic strategic plan and avoid falling into disillusionment, it's important that our visions and strategic plans be honest and well-suited to the changes that are within our more immediate arenas of impact.

I am so inspired by the idea of creating a vision and an accompanying strategic plan by first focusing on the community. Asking the parents of our students what hopes and dreams they have for their child. I don't think I could answer that question for any of my students last year. I now think its important to ask the parents what expectations they hold for their children's education and teachers. In tandem with that, asking my students what their expectations are for a class should fit into my vision as well. I'm excited to create a vision this year, using examples that I have studied, that directly reflects the needs of the community that I serve.

I believe having a clear vision is essential to plan. If we know the overarching goal, we can plan backwards from there and assess regularly (formal and non formal) to meet our target achievements. I notice stragtic planning is not vague, but rather very direct.
Having examples of what student work should look like, knowing state and regional standards, and understanding the developmental ranges, are all ways I can improve in my practice. This is important because if I want to make lasting change, I must know the baby steps needed to meet the finish line. Spoiler alert: the finish line is very far away! With gentle leadership, we can all take little steps, or giant leaps, to see our vision actualized.

An effective vision is one that is clearly define, is purposeful and has measurable components in which some metrics can be used to indicate progress towards the vision. An accompanying strategic plan is like a ladder that would help one to climb to the pinnacle of the vision. In our current system of education attainment of equity for all students should be a major portion of our vision. I am strategically placed as a teacher to play a key role in the attainment of this vision by modeling equitable treatment of my students and leveraging the required help for the disadvantaged.

An effective vision must include broad goals, as well as explanations of what those goals look like when they are instantiated on day-to-day bases. Regardless of what the vision statement uses to define success, it will provide a metric against which performance is measured. A vision requires some amount of, or, at least, an attempt at, moral clarity; while accepting difference, it attempts to forge some sort of universal ethic that promotes wellbeing and flourishing among all groups in order to serve diverse student populations to the greatest extent.
