         <description><![CDATA[<div>Domestic violence:</div><ul><li>violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of a spouse or partner.</li></ul><div>Child abuse:</div><ul><li>any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation</li></ul><div>Elder abuse:</div><ul><li>Elder abuse is an intentional act, or failure to act, by a caregiver or another person in a relationship involving an expectation of trust that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult</li></ul><div>Reactions:</div><ul><li>Self-blame and feelings of shame and guilt</li><li>Fear, terror, and feeling unsafe</li><li>Anger and rage</li><li>Anger turned inward, depression, and suicidal feelings</li><li>Substance abuse</li><li>Eating disorders</li><li>Physical symptoms</li><li>Self-harm</li><li>Grief and loss</li><li>Loss of control, powerlessness</li></ul><div>Signs/Symptoms:</div><ul><li>Withdrawal from friends or usual activities</li><li>Changes in behavior — such as aggression, anger, hostility or hyperactivity — or changes in school performance</li><li>Depression, anxiety or unusual fears or a sudden loss of self-confidence</li><li>An apparent lack of supervision</li><li>Frequent absences from school or reluctance to ride the school bus</li><li>Reluctance to leave school activities, as if he or she doesn't want to go home</li><li>Attempts at running away</li><li>Rebellious or defiant behavior</li><li>Attempts at suicide</li></ul><div>How to help these victims:</div><ul><li>Lend a sympathetic ear</li><li>Guide them to a community services</li><li>Focus on their strengths</li><li>Be a supportive friend</li><li>Confront them&nbsp;</li><li>Help them develop a safe plan</li><li>monitor their emotions and signs</li><li>intervene if necessary</li><li>call the abuse hotline </li></ul>]]></description>
