Cognitive imagery was used to learn and properly perform the rehabilitation exercises. They employed motivational imagery for goal setting (e.g. imagined being fully recovered) and to enhance mental toughness, help maintain concentration and foster a positive attitude. Imagery was used to manage pain.
https://scholar.google.co.uk/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&as_vis=1&q=how+does+imagery+help+motivation+for+rehab+adherence&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&u=%23p%3Dz7jVisr-sBAJ

Gennarelli SM, Brown SM, Mulcahey MK. Psychosocial interventions help facilitate recovery following musculoskeletal sports injuries: a systematic review. The Physician and sportsmedicine. 2020 Oct 1;48(4):370-7.

Systematic review investigated the effects of psychosocial interventions and how they affected recovery, by increasing a positive emotional state and rehab adherence. Some of these studies included goal setting and found that it does facilitate a positive response to post injury motivation and adherence. However further research needs to be into the specifics of the intervention such as duration and best method of implementation.

https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&as_ylo=2020&q=goal+setting+to+improve+motivation+post+injury&btnG=#d=gs_qabs&u=%23p%3DOBe793yZ30QJ

Used to improve motivation:
By having a good support network, when recovering for injury allow the individual to regain identity as an individual rather than just another injury. Those around them will provide support, sympathy, attentiveness as well as listen to the individual regarding their views.

Motivation is largely driven by individual experiences.

Adherence to Rehab-
Without a social network, the injured individual will have reduced self-motivation due to there being no support at the individual lowest point. Therefore they are most likely to not participate within any rehab plans relevant to their injury.
