Integrate Diverse Literature and Media into the Curriculum

This strategy introduces a vast variety of text and media that depicts diverse cultures and backgrounds (Maya, 2024a). One could use books such as "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, which is a fictional story but shows history and traditions of a Columbian family and the impacts it has on the region. To apply this strategy one would read and discuss the book as a class. Encouraging the students to analyze and critically think about the events in the book from a different perspective. In doing this truth, compassion, and empathy would be promoted as well as the students learning to about other cultures, backgrounds, and how to look at things from different viewpoints.

Utilize Case Studies

Incorporate the use of historical case studies, events that occurred in various regions around the globe; this will help in developing global awareness. One could integrate this strategy by introducing case studies such as "The Habsburg Empire" which is about diverse, linguistic, and religious groups that lived together under one rule or "The Achaemenid Empire" and is about an ancient empire that was founded by Cyrus the Great and is known for including and tolerating various cultures into its territory (Wikipedia Contributors, 2025). To implement this strategy, which could be utilized in an ELA, Social Studies, or History class, one could have students read, evaluate, discuss, and/or complete a writing assignment. Students would be encouraged to critically think and analyze the events within the text from different view points.

For this strategy a teacher could create a class calendar that depicts the various cultural festivals, holidays, and heritage months, then encourage students to research different cultures and present their findings. This will foster a hands-on/interactive and engaging learning experience allowing students to learn and understand different cultures and traditions; promoting respect, empathy, and compassion (Maya, 2024a). For example, there Indian cultures that celebrate Diwali and students could be asked to research Diwali and create a piece of art that depicts the celebration, as well as including facts about this celebration, such as who celebrates it, why, when is it, and does occur on the same day every year? This type of strategy could again be implemented into multiple content areas and the project can be utilized for people, places, etc...

Allow students to share their thoughts and opinions about the lesson or topic, doing this students will learn to be better listeners and become more knowledgeable about the topic/lesson (CueMath, 2021). For instance, in the previous strategies I mention to discuss the text with the students, in that context I mean to have open discussions with them about the book, event, celebration, etc... Allow students to share their perspective on the issue or event. In sharing their perspective allows their peers to see other points of view and learn from each other.

Most students, especially younger ones need to be engaged, no two students learn in the same manner and they need this active learning to understand a concept/lesson (Keith, 2016). For instance, a third grader needs more physical engagement then an adult to sit and listen to a lecture for thirty minutes. The third grader is likely to forget what was talked about ten minutes into the lecture, but if you incorporate a fun physical aspect or group/partner work then that same third grader is more likely to stay engaged, retaining information, and being successful in the lesson/topic.

Just as it is important to remain open with your students, you also need to be culturally sensitive with the diverse cultures, beliefs, and languages in the classroom. So, take time to get to know your students cultural nuances, utilize this information to help in formulating lesson plans. For example, modify resources and materials for MLL students and develop activities that are interactive and require collaboration. Doing this students will feel included and that they are valued (Drexel University, N.D.), students will feel seen and heard.

Hi, my name is Lisa Cesana. I am a student working to achieve my Bachelors in elementary education/special education. When designing this toolkit my awareness and respect for diversity really came into play. I selected strategies that would be responsive but would also help in creating an inclusive learning environment. This was achieved via connecting the diversity of the students to the curriculum and using materials, resources, and experiences that are culturally relevant. My personal virtues also had influence on this toolkit as I am a compassionate, open-minded, determined, and responsible person. My compassion for others, influenced choices of promoting empathy and understanding of others, my open-mindedness influenced ability to be flexible and open to other ideas, determination influenced my need to help my students be successful, and responsibility influenced the decisions to keep the students and families involved in decisions because it is their education they should have a say and responsibility to it. I am also honest, trustworthy, kind, and respectful, which influences much of my toolkit, in achieving respect for each other and creating an environment that is welcoming. Where students feel valued, respected, and heard. In creating this toolkit, it really made me think about life and what education looks like in a multicultural sense. I learned that there is culture and diversity everywhere, in every subject, whether it is ELA, History, Math, Art, and so on. I have a deeper understanding of the importance of multicultural education and how it promotes education and respect for diversity among students. Through the creation of this toolkit and this course I feel that I have been equipped with a better understanding of how to incorporate multicultural education into the curriculum if it is not present, and how to adjust it based on the needs of my students. I have also learned about some great strategies that can be used in the future and other activities that will engage students in the learning process, while teaching in diverse ways.
