Spanish conquistadors received land from Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain to trade with Spaniards who brought their riches. The encomienda system was based almost entirely on Indian slave labor.

Spanish-English
Both European settlers encouraged the movement of people to the New World by rewarding them with land, money and laborers. Spain had the Encomienda System which rewarded Spanish conquistadors with land and labor for conquering land in the New World and giving it back to Spain. The English had the Headright System that rewarded 50 acres of land to someone who paid for someone else to immigrate to the Americas (like an indentured servant).

Spain took a very dominant and violent approach to exploration. Conquistadors were Spanish conquerors who decimated native populations. For example, Hernan Cortes led 600 men to defeat the Aztecs in Tenochtitlan. Many of these natives were also killed due to disease, such as smallpox. Another example is Francisco Pizzaro who defeated the Incas in Peru. They used the Encomnienda System that rewarded conquistadors with land grants and Indians for labor.

Spain was also the first European nation to achieve conditions for successful colonization. This was due to previous successful colonies on other islands.

Compared to England, Spain took a more forceful approach to gain the gold and land of the Aztecs. While both England and Spain used force, Spain heavily devastated Tenochtitlan for their gold and silver.
