Montana is a state defined by its natural resources. The state’s motto is “Gold and Silver,” and it is known as the “Treasure State,” both phrases illustrating the importance of natural resources to the state’s history, identity and economy. With the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Great Plains to the east, today the majority of Montana’s major industries thrive on the state’s natural resources.

Forests

Federal and state governments own 13 million acres of commercial forests in western Montana. Logging and the processing of the lumber is a large industry in Montana.

Agricultural Land

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, Montana’s valleys contain fertile soils that are good for cultivation of major livestock and crops such as “beef cattle, sheep, grain, sugar beets, potatoes and fruit.” Wheat and barley are grown on the dryer eastern side of the state.

Sciencing Video Vault

Rangeland

Very large portions of the state are used by ranchers as grazing rangelands for beef cattle and sheep.

Coal

Coal mining is a large and growing industry in Montana. Coal mines are located in the eastern Great Plains region of Montana.

Gold

Gold has historically been a very important mineral in Montana. Discovery of gold in the 1860s was quickly followed by the first European-American settlement in Montana, as people rushed out West to pan for this precious mineral in the state’s rivers. Gold mining continues to this day.

Other Minerals

Petroleum and natural gas are pumped from the ground, while talc, phosphate, vermiculite, clay and gravel are mined. Precious stones and minerals, such as copper, platinum, sapphires and garnets, are also mined.

Water

The powerful rivers of northwestern Montana have been harnessed to produce one-third of the state’s electricity.

Scenery and Wildlife

People flock to Montana to enjoy its natural beauty, especially in the rugged Rocky Mountains. Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks are very popular destinations, where tourists might see “grizzly bears, Rocky Mountain goats, bighorn sheep, moose and gray wolves,” according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Outdoor recreation and the service sector are major contributors to Montana’s economy. Real estate is also a growing industry in the state.

1) Montana is one of the nine mountain states located in the North region known as the United States, and it borders North Dakota and South Dakota to the east.

2) In Latin, the meaning of the name Montana is Mountain. a north - western USA state

3) The Glacier National Park and Yellow Stone National Park

4) Montana’s topography is roughly defined by the Continental Divide, which splits much of the state into distinct eastern and western regions. Most of Montana's 100 or more named mountain ranges are in the state's western half, most of which is geologically and geographically part of the Northern Rocky Mountains.

5) The economy of Montana is based off large industries such as agriculture, travel and tourism. Agriculture is an essential part of a Montana’s economy as it contributes to the state.

6) The majority of this population comes from Montana's twelve tribal nations: Assiniboine, Blackfeet, Chippewa, Cree, Crow, Gros Ventre, Kootenai, Little Shell Chippewa, Northern Cheyenne, Pend d'Oreille, Salish and Sioux.

7) The first railroad to get anywhere near Montana was the Union Pacific. In 1869 the Union Pacific Railroad completed the first transcontinental (all the way across the continent) railroad. It was part of a railroad network that connected cities in the east to Sacramento, California, passing through Corinne, Utah.

8)The Louisiana Purchase was huge. It totaled 828,000 square miles and all or part of what would later become 15 different states. It doubled the size of the United States and made it a major world nation. The Louisiana Purchase stretched from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west.

9)

10) They Settled in Montana: The Act. The Free Homestead Act of 1862 entitled anyone who filed to a quarter-section of land (160 acres) provided that person "proved up" the land. "Proving up" meant living on the land for five years. ... After the Free Homestead Act was enacted people rushed to stake out their claims.

11)

12) Homesteaders lost their crops, their homes, their farms, and their life savings. Impacts from the drought affected every Montana community, especially in the agricultural east. Then, in 1929, the U.S. economy crashed. America entered the worst econmic crisis in its history—the Great Depression.
