Find Mentors

In finding mentors tip number one it mentions "Look around and seek out your role models — people who are working to make things happen in their lives" (D'Souza, 2011). I can use this tip to meet my future goal of teaching in the field of education by seeking out individuals who I look up to and aspire to be like and utilize their experience and knowledge. It is important to learn what makes them successful and to take portions of that and apply it to my own teaching style. Giving and receiving advice form those we look up to is important in any field and will help to ensure we reach success.

Bring Out the Best in Yourself

Bringing out the best in yourself is something that is often not thought about very much because these gifts and talents are a part of who we are and therefore are easily taken for granted. In the book From the Inside Out, it says "In order to bring out the best in yourself, take some time to identify what “your best” is" (D'Souza, 2011). By taking time to sit and reflect on and identify what my best is I can use my gathered results to bring out the best in me. In the field of education, this is an important part of being the best educator I can be so that my student is getting the best out of their education. "A few examples of natural talents that people possess yet often don’t consider as talents or gifts are: Being able to easily talk with people — even strangers Having a creative mind Being a good listener Being very well organized Being a good cook Having an ability to tell stories Having a great sense of humor" (D'Souza, 2011). these are all important talents to recognize that will help to ensure a successful career in education.

Building self-esteem is an important part of meeting my future goal of teaching in the field of education. Incorporating behaviors into my life that bring out the best in me every day is a great way of building my self-esteem. Some of these behaviors might look like being kind to myself, positive affirmation, self-recognition, self-respect, and acceptance.

Chart Your Life

In our book (From The Inside Out) it describes charting your life as being "similar to developing a business plan that is based on your visions, values, and goals" (D'Souza, 2011). This is important to meeting my future goals as an educator because this chart gives my goals life and helps to bring motivation. With a life chart, I can see goals, progress, and where I want to be. This will help me to stay motivated to reach my goals. A quote I found to be very inspirational from the book (From The Inside Out) is "Remember, progress can be slow, so don’t lose faith. Break down your goals into small steps. Seeing the big picture of where those steps will lead you will help marshal your intrinsic motivation" (D'Souza, 2011).

I found there are several things I can do to create my own opportunities that will help me to meet my future goals as an educator. First is setting realistic goals, laying out a plan of action that will lead me to the achievement of these goals. Another is to be willing to work hard, through hard work I can reach the goals I have set for me. Some others include Networking, Taking initiative, and believing in myself. "Instead of waiting around for luck to deliver opportunities to your doorstep, you can continue to move your life in the direction you want by creating your own opportunities. Your life is in your hands" (D'Souza, 2011).

“People never plan to fail, they just fail to plan" (D'Souza, 2011). creating a plan helps to ensure growth and progress. with a plan we can see where we are at, where we want to be and the path that gets us there. Meeting my future goals to become a successful educator can be made more attainable by creating a plan that tracks my progress giving me a visual representation of my hard work and completion of goals.

Make a Change

To make the change we have to have a desire for change greater than the cost. Our desire depends on three things: "dissatisfaction with the status quo, vision for the future, and practical steps to enact change" (D'Souza, 2011). If these three things are greater than what it costs to make the change, our motivation rises as a result. With my goal of being a future educator in mind, there will be many costs of change. However, my desire to see change and a brighter future for my children and future students is large enough to overcome the costs. I will be more motivated for change and more capable of success.

Motivate Yourself Using Loss Aversion

Loss aversion can be a tricky concept and can be a hindrance to success. Or, with the right perspective it can be used as a motivator to take the risks we wouldn't normally take. "We have many choices in life but the actual choice boils down to just two options: Do you want to be the maker of your destiny? Or, would you like to assign that responsibility to someone else?" (D'Souza, 2011). Meeting my future goals may require taking risks and it is important to remember that success does not come from stagnating and not taking risks. Using loss aversion as a motivator to reach my goals in the field of education will be sure to bring about success.

"Find a friend or ally and enjoy the process. Pleasure and laughter generate endorphins – the neurotransmitters that produce feelings of well-being" (D'Souza, 2011). rewarding yourself for your accomplishment is an important step to maintaining positive progress and to reaching your goals. Work should be a place you enjoy, love, and thrive at. being happy at work and with what you do is important to how well you do your job and how motivated you are to keep moving forward. By creating a positive environment that I enjoy I am assuring I reach my goals of becoming an educator and a fun good one that loves their job. I strongly believe that a positive attitude leads to a positive work environment that leads to positive success.
