Ms. Horton said that she would not choose another career field. "The kids have taught me more than I could ever teach them." She loves the challenge and all of the rewards that come with SPED.

6. What changes, if any, would you make to the educational system with regard to special needs children? Consider such aspects as inclusion, funding, state assessments, etc…

She had a lot to say about this question, therefore, I am going to simply quote everything she had to say. "I think SPED has changed a lot over the years. The students are included now and more accepted. I recall when I was in HS, we had a girl with special needs that we saw before and after school, but NEVER during the day. State testing is a nightmare sometimes! I don't feel it really shows what the students know (referring to SPED students). State funding in general is a joke! Schools don't get enough funding."

5. What advice can you give me for teaching children with special needs in the regular education classroom?

The biggest thing Ms. Horton said all teachers need to do with special needs students, is to be PATIENT. Special needs do not like to treated like they are an inconvenience. A teacher should "make the environment inviting for all students."

4. How does teaching children with special needs differ from teaching other children? What are some challenges you face in teaching special needs children? What are some rewards in teaching special needs children?

"Social needs have to be met. Slower pace. Meet them at their level. One day they 'have it', then have to re-teach or start all over." Ms. Horton said that there are several rewards. One being the love and excitement the students have about coming to school. Another being when the students accomplish something and become very excited.

3. How have your ideas toward teaching changed with each passing year of experience? Can you recall your ideas about teaching when you were a teacher education student like me? What were they? What are they now?
