Everyday life in Anglo Saxon was hard and rough even for the rich. At the top were the thanes, the Saxon upper class. They enjoyed hunting and feasting and they were expected to give their followers gifts like weapons. Below them were the churls.

For entertainment, the Anglo-Saxons enjoyed horse racing, hunting, feasting and music-making. They played dice and board games such as draughts and chess. Entertainment during feasts included listening to a harp being played and juggling balls and knives.

Food: Anglo Saxon women baked bread, brewed beer, and ground grain. Mead, which is an Saxon drink made from fermented honey. Honey was very important to them because they didn't have sugar. The like meat and fish. Meay was a luxury so only the rich ate it and only frequently. The Churls ate bread, cheese and eggs. The ate eggs from ducks geese, wild birds and whatever else was there.

Clothes: Men wore a shirt and tunic. Woman wore a long linen garment with a long tunic over it, and mantles. They used combs made of bones or antlers.

Weapons: They wore an iron helmet and held a round wooden shield. They fought with spears, and battle axes. The Anglo Saxons only lost The Battle of Hastings because some of them broke formation.

Many Anglo-Saxon children didn't go to a school, they stay at home with their parents to help with the jobs at home.Th only schools in Anglo-Saxon times were attached to the churches for furture priest. So most children stay at home to help their parents. Anglo-Saxon boys and girls would look after all the different animals in the settlement. Anglo-Saxon girls were too young to weave the cloth that their clothes were made out of. So they would help the older girls and women by collecting wool from the sheep and goats and spinning it to make yarn. Boys and girls would chop the firewood for the hearth and check that the fire was burning well. They would also help with preparing the food, hunting and fighting training.

The Anglo-Saxons were a cultural group who inhabited England from the 5th century. They comprised people from Germanic tribes who migrated to the island from continental Europe, their descendants, and indigenous British groups who adopted many aspects of Anglo-Saxon culture and language. The Anglo-Saxons established the Kingdom of England, and the modern English language owes almost half of its words – including the most common words of everyday speech – to their language.

The Anglo-Saxon settlement of Britain is the process which changed the language and culture of most of what became England from Romano-British to Germanic. The Germanic-speakers in Britain, themselves of diverse origins, eventually developed a common cultural identity as Anglo-Saxons. This process principally occurred from the mid-fifth to early seventh centuries, following the end of Roman rule in Britain around the year 410. The settlement was followed by the establishment of Anglo-Saxon kingdoms in the south and east of Britain, later followed by the rest of modern England, and the south-east of modern Scotland.[1]

The Anglo-Saxon period in Britain spans approximately the six centuries from 410-1066AD. The period used to be known as the Dark Ages, mainly because written sources for the early years of Saxon invasion are scarce. However, most historians now prefer the terms 'early middle ages' or 'early medieval period'.

It was a time of war, of the breaking up of Roman Britannia into several separate kingdoms, of religious conversion and, after the 790s, of continual battles against a new set of invaders: the Vikings.

The Britons were Christians, but were now cut off from Rome, but the Anglo-Saxons remained pagan. In AD 597 St Augustine had been sent to Kent by Pope Gregory the Great to convert the Anglo-Saxons. It was a tall order for his tiny mission, but gradually the seven kingdoms did convert, and became exemplary Christians – so much so that they converted their old tribal homelands in Germany.

The strongest ties in Anglo-Saxon society were to kin and lord. The ties of loyalty were to the person of a lord, not to his station. There was no real concept of patriotism or loyalty to a cause. This explains why dynasties waxed and waned so quickly. A kingdom was only as strong as its war-leader king. There was no underlying administration or bureaucracy to maintain any gains beyond the lifetime of a leader.
Kings could not, except in exceptional circumstances, make new laws. Their role instead was to uphold and clarify previous custom. The first act of a conquering king was often to assure his subjects that he would uphold their ancient privileges, laws, and customs.
