Michelle Obama - Becoming

Michelle Obama shares her journey of how she grew up in the South side of Chicago, and how she had to fight through multiple forms of discrimination, (whether it was because she was a woman, grew up in a low-income area, or her skin color) in order to become a lawyer, and eventually an advocate for healthy habits and strong women. She shares how she met Barack Obama, as well as some of the unique experiences she had while being the First Lady, such as meeting the Queen of England. Overall, it is a story of perseverance, and a great example of how anyone can be successful through hard work, even if they come from very little.

The Help

The Help is a story that is set during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's. A white woman named Skeeter comes back to her home and tries to convince the African American maids working in the wealthy white households the story of what it is like to work in the segregated South. This was a challenging feat because it was a great risk for the African American women to tell their story, as they could easily be fired from their job, and treated even worse in society than they already were. Eventually Skeeter convinces them to share their story, and the book ends with the maids being empowered, as they were able to speak their mind and show the side of the segregated South most of the white people didn't see.
