Beach Soccer, in its current form, began to be disputed in 1992, when the rules of the game were created and a pilot championship was organized. In an eleven to eleven version, with the usual rules, it was practiced on Brazilian beaches at least since 1930. In the 1960s, there were organized championships in Santos and Rio de Janeiro, and even a Brazilian championship of selections. However, the taste for soccer practice in the sand, or on the beach, is much earlier, also in Portugal, to the sixties, retreating, at least to the 30's of the twentieth century.

In 1993, the first professional championship was organized in Miami Beach, with teams from Brazil, the United States, Italy and Argentina. Brazil was the winner.

The Portuguese Soccer Team represents Portugal in the international sand soccer (or beach soccer) competitions.

The Campeonato Nacional de Futebol de Praia in Portugal

It is held is the summer months of July and August and is run by the Portuguese Football Federation. The competition started in 2010 after the unofficial Portuguese Beach Soccer League. The winner is the Portuguese Beach Soccer Champion and the two bottom teams are relegated to Divisão Nacional – the secondary division, open to the remain teams.
