First stage- Trust vs. Mistrust

The first stage of Erikson's Theory of development is the most important stage. In this first stage an infant learns how they can or cannot trust their caregivers. I spoke with my parents about this and asked them about me as a infant, they said I was a very easy-going baby and didn't cry often. When I did it was usually because I needed confront from my mother. That I only would be comforted by her and that anyone else that tried I would just cry harder. I believe this is because I had an immediate bond with my mother and knew from early on that i could trust her with me.

Stage 2: Autonomy vs. shame and doubt

In Erikson's second stage, autonomy vs. shame and doubt, it is important to begin letting your child do things on their own. Even if that means sending them to school with shoes on the wrong feet or letting them have an accident while potty training. In this stage a child is learning how they can care for themselves and how much they can do for themselves. If you do not allow them to experience this, then they will end up doubting themselves their entire life. I asked my parents about how my toilet training went, and my mother told me that I again was fairly easy to get to use the bathroom or would ask on my own most of the time. That after having an accident one day at the supermarket and having to ride home in wet clothes I never had another accident again. I believe that had caused me to feel some shame for not being able to do what I had so badly wanted, and I learned from that moment on to pay better attention to my body and cues of when I needed to use the restroom. My mother said I was between 18 months and 2 years old when that incident occurred.

Erikson's third stage of Devlopment is based on a child's ability to take initiative and do things themselves. This happens in the preschool years. My mother told me when I was in preschool, I was very independent and always trying to do things myself. She said my teacher would always praise me for my ability to play alone and stay busy, but that I tended to be bossier than other children and always wanted to take the lead on things.

Eriksons fourth stage of development focuses on a child's ability to understand. This begins around the time elementary school starts. Going into my elementary school years my parents told me I was always head of my class in reading. I know this is true as in my older years I always read way beyond my level. My mother said that within the first few months of kindergarten I was reading full age-appropriate books and having the ability to grasp most of the story that I was reading with being able to retell stories hours later after being home from school.

Erikson's fifth stage of development begins around age 12 and lasts through puberty (12-18years). In this stage a child is still understanding concepts of life. around this age is when I begin to try on makeup and clothing that was a bit older than my years and my parents would let me know that. I still enjoyed playing dolls with my younger sisters though or going to the park with my parents. I still struggled with emotion and would get very upset if I wasn't getting the attention, I felt I deserved. My mom told me I was quite the brat in the beginning of this stage, but as I got older things began to level out.

Erikson's sixth stage of development begins in young adulthood and goes to about 40 years of age. Once you have successfully understood having a good sense of self identity you move into the next stage. Where you may be moving away from home and beginning to pay your own way in life or finding love for the first time. When I was 18 years old, I did these things, I moved out into my first apartment with my boyfriend. I got engaged and married within a few years of that happening and then began our own family.

Erikson's seventh stage focuses on Generativity vs. Stagnation. This stage begins in older adulthood starting around age 40. In this stage, it is characterized by a need to give to others. This could be by raising your family or even giving to charities. This stage I am not old enough to be into yet. I believe as my kids grow and I begin to mature more I will phase into this stage. I already thrive in giving to others, as this is my happy place. I feel that as I complete school and move into my teaching career, I will feel the fulfillment of this stage even more.

This is the stage of reflection and when people look back on their lives and see what that have achieved. Though people who didn't complete the previous stages tend to have feeling of lose or regret. This may lead to being dissatisfied or depressed. People who have completed all these stages tend to have a genuine feeling of satisfaction in life. I believe that at my age now I am thoroughly going through all these stages and making great strides in them. I feel like I will look back on my life and all I had/have accomplished and feel a great sense of accomplishment.
