I think the most important support is making a connection with teachers and encouraging the implementation of new learning. This helps build a level of trust so they are open to coaching. I think it's also important to be willing to model for teachers, as this will also help teachers feel more comfortable to be observed and more willing to accept feedback.

I really think the most important part of developing a coaching relationship with teachers is to get to know them on a personal level. I was lucky to become a coach at the school I was teaching at, which made the transition easier because I already formed relationships with the teachers and had built a level of trust with them. When teachers trust you they are more comfortable and open to feed back. Also, modeling lessons for teachers helps establish a relationship and level of trust with them. It kind of gives you some "street cred" with them because they see you doing the work that they are expected to do every day. That hopefully leads to them being open to you observing and providing feedback to them.

I believe that teachers need to know that as a coach that you are there to support them and help them the best way that you can. When implementing new practices teachers need to feel that they have support and guidance along the way. I also believe that as a coach we need to be knowledgeable regarding what new practices are being implemented so that we can provide successful guidance to the teachers.

I really think that the most important strategy for starting the coaching relationship is to build relationships with the teachers. There needs to be trust among the teachers and coach. Teachers also need to feel that you care and want them to succeed. I also feel that being a coach and a teacher at the same time gives some sort of understanding to other teachers that I understand the challenges of teaching.

I believe somethings that will help teachers implement new practices are the follow-up, debriefing, and offering continued support and conversations. Through current feedback, teachers have shared that they feel as though a new initiative is rolled out, they get a one time "training," and then the support stops there. Through following a natural cycle of training, modeling, observing, debriefing, meaningful conversations back to additional training, the opportunity for learning is continuous and will allow for a gradual release of support to happen.

I feel that laying the foundation for a collaborative partnership is crucial for initiating the coaching relationship. As a new "coach" this year, one of my "biggest fears" is being able to transition from a traditional classroom teacher to an instructional coach who is focused on supporting each of the classroom teachers. I want each teacher to embrace that I am not there to make decisions for them and or tell them "what to do." It is important that they know that I feel that their voices are just as important as mine and that we are working together towards a common goal.

One thing that I've found to be most important when helping support teacher with implementing new practices is to not only give the information about the practice but also to model and give them time to plan to implement it in their classroom. Something I've heard a lot so far this year is that teachers are learning a lot of really great things but don't necessarily have the time to plan for implementation or have the opportunity to get feedback once they've begun to implement it into their classroom.

Something that I have done and continue to do when beginning a coaching relationship is to start with a one-on-one conversation. When I have the opportunity to sit down with the teacher, it gives me an opportunity to really hear where the teacher is and what they think their needs are. Building that level of trust and foundation with teachers is a critical piece of the coaching relationship.

One successful support I found that is most helpful for teachers is to research and provide the right materials to implement new practices. In addition, help them look at variations of what they may be doing already but did not have time to try something else. I often find that the time factor is an obstacle versus willingness for teachers. Therefore when I support them in ways that they are not overwhelmed to try something new or think of something in a new way success happens.

I help them out in all ways having fun in their classrooms, joining in lessons, working with students who need help in their classrooms, etc...This truly opens up the coaching relationship, and again is all about building relationships.

I find that the supports most important for helping teachers implement new practices are solid training, modeling, coaching and opportunities for continuous feedback. With any new practice, teachers need to feel confident in delivering new practices. Providing resources for tutorials, fidelity checklists and easy access to materials give them the ability to start strong. Offering modeling and coaching sessions will motivate them to continue building their expertise. The cycle continues and best practices continue to grow.

Some teachers know me, but others don't, so it was important for me to start positive and willing to help in anyway. Some teacher just needed someone to vent to, so being that person is a way to build a trusting and open relationship.

In a college PR class, I learned the importance of what my professor called "leaning in doorways". I took this lesson to heart and am finding that it is my main strategy for building relationships with my teachers. I learned the importance of letting people talk about themselves and making a point to remember details. The goal should be to know 2 things about a person outside of the work place and the names of their children or pets as well as follow up with that info in future conversations. It is the same strategy we use with our students to build those relationships. When you show genuine interest in someone, it opens the doorways to positive interactions.
