"Even as she was now, medicated and lost to the present, with hair she forgot to wash or brush and deep wrinkles growing on her face, you could see she'd once been as comely as any girl that ever danced barefoot across this tangled country of Ozark hills and hollers. Long, dark, and lovely she had been, in those days before her mind broke and the parts scattered and she let them go" (pg.6).

This helps us picture Ree's mother as a person whose mental illness has consumed her life and appearance. She no longer takes care of her image and fails to be motivated enough to get dolled up as she had before developing her mental illness. In a sense, she is no longer the same person she used to be and has lost a big part of who she was because of her illness and now can't properly take care of herself.
- Oscar Romero

'His court day was this mornin' and he didn't show.' He flung his arm out, gesturing vaguely toward the land up the hill behind the house. 'I'd sell off that Bromont timber now while you can'" (page 112).
This explains that although Teardrop was previously portrayed as this evil and selfish man, he actually is looking out for Ree and her family to a certain extend. He's the first and only one so far to update her on her father not appearing to court. For Ree, this means that her house will soon be seized by the government, and Teardrop is trying to give her advice on what she should do next, as well as give her some financial support. - Oscar Romero

She knows her husband is cheating on her and that he doesn't really love her, but rather someone else. Having these thoughts about how unimportant she is to her husband, makes her feel like a burden to him. At the same time, it helps her understand where her place in his life is which helps her make sure not to overplay her part and hurt herself even more.
- Oscar Romero

He cares more about the baby than her and it is almost like Ned is the only thing tieing them together. This is a bad thing because it allows Floyd to treat Gail without any respect, as long as Ned is taken care of. That suit you, Thump?' 'You're willin' to stand for her, are you?' 'If she does wrong, you can put it on me.' 'Agreed. She's now yours to answer for'" (page 137).

This expands the idea that deep down Thump isn't all that evil, as previously thought from the first interaction that we saw between Ree and Teardrop. This shows that Teardrop, although trying to be so cold hearted at times, has a kind heart and is trying to protect Ree. He recognizes that Ree potentially lost her father, and as her uncle he doesn't want to abandon her with all her responsibilities. Teardrop stepped up for Ree, and came to her rescue when she needed someone and was getting beat up.
- Oscar Romero

You was warned nice'n you wouldn't listen- why didn't you listen?' 'I can't listen. I can't just listen.'"
(page 132)
This shows that because of her stubbornness she had to face the consequences and was beat up. However, this also demonstrates how brave and courageous she is because she was told not to go visit Thump again, but she did. She knew it wasn't going to result in anything good for her, but her bravery to face that humiliation from people- to get beat up and ridiculed for not listening and getting herself into trouble- in order to find answers about what happened to her dad shows a lot about Ree that wasn't highlighted as much as it is now.
- Oscar Romero

Did you notice?"

(Pages 120-121)

This shows that despite Gail being in a dysfunctional marriage she's trying to make it work even though the relationship is clearly one sided. Gail's requests for Floyd to stop seeing the other woman was brushed off by him but at the end, Gail did not care. She has grown so accustomed to being in a toxic marriage that she picks on the slightest positive thing to focus on, which is that he at least didn't lie to her. This says a lot about Gail's character because she is portrayed as a type of person that tries to look at the positive side to everything, while at the same time it being a weakness to her character because it allows her to be taken advantage of and get mistreated.
- Oscar Romero

Blonde milton was a grandfather in age but not in manner, square shouldered and flat bellied.."
-
We know from Ree that he has a very harsh character and he is ruthless with words ut I think that we he just shows up infront of Ree and how he treats her in her own home says a lot about his character.

"'I got them two boys and Mom to tend, man. I need that house to help'... Megan said, 'Oh, good lord, baby girl- you daddy left you to do all that?'"
(page 55)

This shows Megan as one of the few people who have actually cared enough for Ree to sympathize for her situation. Many people in the story hear what she is going through, but fail to make it clear that they truly understand the gravity of her problems. Megan asking these questions make her seem like a compassionate person that doesn't like the idea of a teenage girl having to juggle all this by herself. She knows that no one should be going through what she's going through, especially not alone, and ends up lending Ree a helping hand by giving her advice on the best place she should go to next. Although she doesn't go with Ree to visit Thump, she tells her to continue her journey and that she believes in her, which is enough to keep Ree motivated.
- Oscar Romero

"Mom's skin was sallow, her face was blank and her soul was sincerely given over to silence and the approximate refuge offered by incomprehension"
(page 118).

This depicts Ree's mother, as someone who is empty and nonreceptive. Her mother no longer can grasp reality and it seems as if she has no idea what is going on around her. She has shun out the world, and is oblivious to how desperately her daughter needs her.
- Oscar Romero

"'Mom, I need you. Mom- look at me. Look at me, Mom. Mom, I'm goin' to need you to help. There's things happenin' that I don't know what to do about. Mom? Look at me, Mom. Mom?'"
(page 118)

This really gives us an insight as to how Ree is dealing with the things going on around her life. It is all too much for her to make sense of, all by herself. However, Ree realizes in this moment that she is entirely left to deal with this by herself and it becomes a crushing reality to face. Later on, the weight of things seem to be easier for her to carry whether it be because she has learned to be more resilient in the face of adversity or because she feels like she has people around rooting for her, such as Gail and teardrop, who care about her.
- Oscar Romero

"'Mom, you might as well come out of your room. This is how I look now. I know it troubles you to see, but you might as well come out of your room'n get some sun."
(page 153)

This really helps explain the circumstance that Ree's mother lives in. Because of her illness she can't manage her emotions properly and when she saw her daughter all beat up, it froze her. It is almost as though she can't accept that that happened to her daughter and as a result has locked herself in her room, away from looking at Ree. She refuses to leave her room, even to get some fresh air, which shows the huge difficulty she has with regulating her emotions.
- Oscar Romero
