Site: The boat

The story about this teen girl, Mai that has been send away by her mother, to be a refugee, so that she will does not suffer the consequences of oppression in Vietnam by Northern Vietnam. The story tells her journey being send to the boat and the journey in the boat. It shows the struggles she went through and her experience on the boat. She had to leave her home, meet strangers, and travelled by herself never to see her parents again. This site makes the situation come to life by having some effects such as when the boat violently sways, the text and picture follows the movement allowing audience to have a visual of how the boat is moving. When there is a folksong, the song would play in the background for the audience to listen and be more involved in the story. The black and white illustration also sets the mood of the story to emphasise on loss, destruction, and hardships. Although, I am not a big fan of war stories, this site really kept me on my toes. It engaged me and felt as if I was at the scene viewing it from a third person’s perspective.

story : hope
The story is about how life was like before and after covid-19. During the pandemic, many unpredictable things happened to everyone. People were not allowed outside, people were losing jobs and businesses were shutting down and so on. But as covid-19 started to get better, the life of the people also became better. People were slowly allowed to go back to how it was before covid-19. People are getting their jobs back, people are able to go out and meet their friends and family. It tells the story by showing how empty the different places where used to be crowded with people were and the colors were all balck and white. Showing how depressing it was and everything dull. It is as if there was no light left in the world. But then it changes to the same few places crowded with people and colorful. There was still hope in the world where things can go back to normal where everyone was allowed out. This was effective to tell the story because I was able to feel the emotions of the different scenes. I could feel the anxiousness and how scary it was during those scenes where it was black and white. But when the scene was colorful and bright, I was able to feel the happiness of the people in the scene. It made me feel a sense of hope for the future.

I chose the website titled “Hope”, which tells the story of how we should use our personal perspectives on COVID-19 to apply it to future world issues and to help one another out in times of need. This story was effective because first, it introduced sad and gloomy sounds for me to feel the negative distorted words such as “hopeless” and “anxious". It also uses 3D modelling and camera angles which gives a perspective of the environment we are living in vicariously. For example, the globe spinning, with various COVID-19 cases appearing in different countries. Additionally, the visuals are captivating as it did a comparison between covid and pre-covid times where it transitions from the black and white vacant streets and towns into vibrant colors where the world resumes daily life activities. Through visuals, it was effective in making feel sad to happy, as the colors turned from dull to bright colors. Also, scrolling through these transitions and visuals made me feel sensory, and I was fully captivated by it. These visuals helped me relate back to my experiences during the pandemic, as Singapore was in lockdown once, where we experience not being able to travel out for any activities.

Site: Adventure Time: Distant Lands

It tells a story of BMO and his adventure on a new planet, it has objects where you can use to interact with BIMO where you get a glimpses of his personality. It also has a ping pong game, a recipe for family to tryout in real life and a BMO Beat Box maker. I love how when you enter the website has an interactive showcase of how BMO is like from his singing to his curiosity of the rocks to him wearing the cowboy hat to the button on him. I like the way BMO’s face is a tv screen for the wallpaper, trailer and all the other interactive games. Personally, I like the BMO Beat Box maker as I enjoy making music and I see myself there for hours. The trailer was really engaging as it is like we have found something new within the interactive website, as for the game it was really difficult to beat BMO as the ping pong ball goes faster and faster but I enjoyed it as it makes me feel really competitive. Overall, it was a really great website as there are lot of thing to explore and find out more about BMO.

I choose "hope". This story is telling us about how life is before and after covid-19. It shows that the world is suffering from this disease and how it affected many businesses cause of lockdowns around the world and its negative feeling toward people, well, on the half part of the video it shows how people use to live on their daily life positively by working with their colleagues in the office and going out for some fresh air or having a meal at a restaurant. This story is effective because many people has been through lots of up and downs during the period when this pandemic has affected, some people have suffer from the lost of their close ones or even being a lot more stress for their school work or business work, and to me personally when covid hits and there's a period of time when Singapore has lockdown, I feel kind of stress as I just started my Higher Nitec back when covid just started as I'm still new to the course and its more challenging for me cause all my lessons it's on home base learning and I'm afraid that I won't be able to catch up.

site: HOPE

The story talks about COVID-19 and how the world as a whole slowly moves on from it. In the first half, everything was black and white as it shows how everyone was at a lost with most countries being under lockdown and the streets and work places were all empty and everyone had to work alone at home. At the next half, the colours in the world have reappeared as everyone seems to go back to their normal lives like walking their dogs, going back to the office to work and being able to hang out or talk to their friends again. The streets that were once empty was now filled with cars and people.

It tells the story by showing a contrast of how the world was during COVID-19 with everyone stuck at home, with grey and dark scenes and gloomy music. While the after, where everyone is back to how it used to be, having fun, with bright and colourful scenes and uplifting music.

This story is effective as i am able to relate deeply to it even more as this has happened to everyone and this brings us through how lost and helpless everyone felt during COVID-19 and how everyone was happy and calm after everything that they had been through during lockdown. This story tells us to always hope for the future, that things will get better.

Site: The deep sea

I think the story gives me a general view of the ocean and what lives in it. The words tell me additional information that is unique and interesting about the creatures and the sea.

The story progresses along with the depth of the ocean. Despite the fact that it is majority presents through pictures and indications, we can still figure out information like there are more marine lives living near shallow waters and there are bigger possibility for huge creatures to appear at deeper depths. The creatures all have name tags and picture attached so it would be easier to look them up when we wanna know more about what the story wants to convey--which is the beauty of the mysterious ocean. Personally, I looked up GREENLAND SHARK and found out a lot of things about their lives. For me, I enjoy reading the words boxes appearing time to time, as they share fun facts with the audience within a few lines. I am really attracted to this kind of storytelling as my visual site and the need to learn something are fulfilled at the same time. I am glad that the author didn't indicate how deep we have gone and something like the total depth. That would ruin the fun. As I scroll down, it always surprises me how deep the ocean is since I thought not only once 'it should be the end right?'. By the end of this journey, I think my aspect towards the sea has changed by quite a lot. And the most shocking thing I learned...is that the OCEAN CAN BE 10000 METRES DEEP, WOW.

site: rebuilding hati

this site raises the awareness of living conditions of the citizens in Hati and the many issues that they faced especially after the earthquake in 2010. it included detailed explanations and examples about the houses, argriculture, health and economy issues that the country faced. the site tells the story almost like an newspaper article, with pictures and many factual information and statistics. it also had an interactive decision making section at the end of each chapter for the readers to choose what they would do if they had the authority to make changes for the citizens of Hati and to make their lives better. I found that section most interesting as after picking what i would choose to do on behalf of the country, the site tells me the long term consequences of my actions and how much worse or better Hati would become in the span of 10 years. when my choices led to Hati becoming a better developed country, i felt accomplished and satisfied. there is a button at the bottom that allows you to re pick your choices and go through the story until you are satisfied with the ending. it was effective for me as i was able to learn more about how people are living their lives in Hati without feeling bored.

Site: Hope

This story tells about the covid-19 pandemic that happened to the world. It showed how life changed and the whole world was dark and there were not many people out in the streets and in the work building.

1. Hope

2. The story talks about COVID-19 and what the world is like during the start of the pandemic. It shows how life has changed when the whole pandemic started. It starts with the negative keywords like “hopeless, sadness, chaos, fear, suffering” and more. These words describe how life was during the pandemic and how scary it was. The video starts in just black and white colours. It shows how dark life was and with the number of cases being more than 1 thousand in most countries and increasing per day shows how COVID-19 have a major impact on the world. Going through a lockdown and the street was usually busy with vehicles and citizens became quiet and dead. Streets and roads were empty and the cafeteria, school and work that used to be filled with noises became very quiet and things start to move online. Online school and work were starting to become the new norm for the generation.

But soon, the world changes again. The video started to show colours but it started to go backwards. It started to show how different life was. How different life was before the pandemic started. How bright the world used to look like. It shows how the streets that look dead and quiet now was once filled with vehicle passing thought and people walking around. People get to gather and have social interaction with one another at work, school or the café and restaurants. There is no number of cases in the world. This shows how the COVID-19 has made a huge impact to the world and to people. How with just a virus, life was put at risk and made a huge change to people's life.

3.The story was released in 2020 when the whole COVID-19 was new and the pandemic has made us when through lockdowns and several restrictions. Knowing that and watching it, gave me a sense of hope that the world is going to change. That we are going to overcome the pandemic and the world is going to be colourful again like how it used to. It gave me hope that if everyone work together to fight the virus, we get to bring back the world. We get to be united again and cure the viruses. It gave me a sense of hope that this is not the end of it.

site: The Deep Sea

The site talks about the ocean. Specifically, what has been discovered and the achievements that humans have achieved in trying to study the dark depths of the sea.

The website is very simple. To progress, you just have to scroll down and the more you scroll, the “deeper” you get to the ocean depths.

The top features the more common things you find in the ocean, all various types of fish, a few sharks, all the “common knowledge” things that you expect to see. Occasionally, at a certain depth, there will be a little titbit or an accomplishment made by humans. For example, “You have scrolled the height of Mount Everest” shows up at 8845 meters deep.

But the deeper you go, the less known species of aquatic life show up. The amount dwindles to 1 or 2 the deeper you go. This shows how unexplored the depths of the ocean is.

The website eventually ends at 10924 meters deep, the deepest any human has gone into the depths of the ocean.

It was effective for me as it tells me that even though the current generation is very “advanced” compared to the past, even now, we have not even come close to exploring the whole of Earth, and that perks my inner science self-up. The technology that exists today is simply not good enough for such a feat, but maybe in the future.

Site: Hope
1) The story tells how life was like before and after the pandemic. It first started with negative words such as 'stuck', 'pain', 'hoplessness'. it continues by telling us the statistics of the infected cases around the world and showing us how life is like during the pandemic. Everyone was alone, stuck, and, in pain as they lack human interaction to keep themselves safe. We can see how lonely everyone looks abiding by the restrictions. As the story continues, it transits to the time we overcome the pandemic and life returns back to normal. We could see everyone working together, eating together and even talking to each other in the same room.

2) This site tells they story with the help of colours and music. At the start, the visuals were all black, implying the negative words included in the video such as pain, stuck, hopelessness. The music used at the start was also very frightening and gory especially with the added sound of storms and thunders. This tells me about the difficult and scary lives we led during the pandemic. Moving on, as the situation started improving, we could see colours in the video. People are living brighter lives as they are able to reconnect. The music was also much more cheerful and revolving.

3) Hence, it is effective to me as the visuals, music, and colours used was able to evoke feelings that I myself felt when the pandemic started and when restrictions were eased and gatherings were allowed.

Site: Adventure time: Distant lands

This story tells us about a character named BMO who traveled through space and time in an attempt to "save" the planet. However, BMO’s attempt in saving the planet is not really going smoothly due to BMO’s playful and non-serious personality and the partner BMO found is the actual person who’s saving BMO from trouble.

This tells its story through an interactive website with BMO in a spaceship where you can press various buttons, levers and even BMO’s face. This is effective in telling its story to me as the website is very engaging and entertaining which actually makes me more curious to fidget around and find out more. BMO’s face is a screen which shows three folders when you click on it. First folder is about BMO’s show where it shows a wallpaper and a trailer about the series show. Second folder is called “Potato Pong”, inside the folder there’s a game which is basically ping pong and a recipe for potato pie as well. In the last folder it’s a basic beat maker for those who like music. Overall this website could easily capture people’s attention and share its story from how fun and engaging it is.

Site: The Deep Sea

I chose this site as I love the sea and I am very interested in animals. The story is about the ocean and the interesting different types of creatures living in there. We start of at the start with creatures that sound familiar, as we go down, we see unfamiliar creatures that I had never heard of. The story also gives us information about what happened at some levels of deepness in the sea.
I really liked that they used a gradient background, so that the deeper I scroll, the darker it is like the ocean. I like how they placed pictures of the sea creatures with their names. And also they did not put much information on the creatures which I think is great as if it is too wordy, I would not continue scrolling. They placed the sea creatures in different sizes, the small ones are one side and the bigger ones can take up the whole space, I like this as we can see the different range of animals in the ocean. I also like how the submarine follows my scrolling as it makes me anticipate how far they have gone.

Site: The Deep Sea

This is a site that tells a deep story about the ocean. The main point of this site is to depict how deep the ocean is. For the main section of the site, it just scrolls down all the way, the further you scroll the further down into the ocean you go.

As I progressed further down the ocean, I notice that the number of things that live at that depth gets progressively lesser, and from about 4000 metres onwards there are barely any organisms there due to the extreme pressure. There are only so few organisms every few hundred metres and I think it's very interesting as this shows how wild and crazy the ocean is, and also how little humans know about it. It is also true that humans have discovered less than 10% of the ocean, which is just nuts to think about.

In addition, I feel that the way they show the ocean and how they make you scroll down the site to see more is an interesting concept, as you can scroll at your own pace and you can even stop and Google the different organisms, such as the Japanese Spider Crab, Anglerfish and so much more.

Site: Rebuilding Haiti

The story tells about the people of Haiti who want to bounce back from the events after the earthquake that hit their city in January 2010. Earthquakes are disasters that cannot be avoided and can have a fatal impact on the people living in the area where the earthquake occurred. Buildings were destroyed and many lives were lost in the earthquake in 2010. After the earthquake, the Haitian government rebuilt houses for the earthquake victims but the houses built by the government were of poor design and the tap water was salty. But this earthquake also made the people of Haiti even more solid and united to rise again for the sake of their beloved country. They want to rebuild their country and carry out massive reforms to build Haiti into the new Haiti.

The story from this site is very effective for me because it gives me a lesson about life. From what they experienced and what they faced, they patiently went through it all and they still wanted to bounce back from adversity. They want to rebuild their country to be a better country even though there are still many obstacles that they have to face. They remain confident and optimistic about their goals.

And how we as humanity can overcome it by helping each other.

It tells the story by using visuals, music and words that are impactful. It was effective for me as the starting screen sparked my curiosity, I did not know what to expect but yet I was looking forward to it. It grabbed my attention by showing words that were commonly seen and heard when the pandemic first started. It showed how badly the entire world was affected by the pandemic. Everything was in black and white, showing how lifeless the world has become. The white bar progress bar at the bottom changes colours when it comes to the second half, implying that the world can be colourful again. Next, It showed the fully recovered world, where everything is returning back to normal. Everyone is truly free once again. A top view of the buildings is shown and this time round, it is reversed and filled with bright colours. The choice of music is brilliant too! Finally, it ends off with the word “HOPE”, followed by a short quoted paragraph where the main message lies. It was nothing short of an enjoyable and thought-provoking experience, a true masterpiece in my opinion. It really allowed me to keep things in perspective and focus on what is important.

Chosen site: Introducing BMO!

The story that the website tells is an off spin of Adventure Time, which is one of my favorite cartoons, where the 2 main character isn’t in it, but BMO, the robot! With a comedic, upbeat vibe to the story to attract teens/kids or people who wants to relive the nostalgia of adventure time. In this off spin, BMO is in a world that is in danger, and it all comes down to BMO to save it.

How the website tells the story of the off spin is by using an interactive website where BMO and several other objects can be found, with tiny easter eggs in it as well. From trailers to recipes from the show itself. It is a great way attract people to the world of “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” as it shows the vibes and characteristics of BMO and the world. This story telling way is extremely effective for me as, earlier said I love Adventure Time which may cause some biasness, other than that, the website is filled with mini secrets to find, easter eggs and shows the vibe, characters, what’s going on, world buildings and expectations of the story, this to me is effective as I love exploring to find secrets, I’ve played games such as Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden ring, which requires exploring for mini/big secrets, it is always a joy to find these secrets as it is interactive and will help the character grow even without the cartoon, an example of this is, when you try to delete a folder BMO will glitch out and say “This is probably for the better” and shut off before rebooting, or when you press the accelerate pedal, the space ship will accelerate and BMO will start singing, in conclusion, an interactive website is extremely effective as you can hide mini secrets and more to help your story grow even without the cartoon,

Site: Hope

This site tells a story about how we, as a whole world, collectively survived through the Covid-19 pandemic situation when it was worse back then. At the start, there were words like ‘fear’, ‘suffering’, ‘anxious’, ‘separation’, and more negative words circling around the world. Besides, there are statistics of millions of cases around the world, to show how Covid-19 has really impacted the lives of people. The world was colourless. Streets, restaurants, office workplaces were all plain empty and no one around. In fact, people stayed at home to work. However, things changed. What was once dead was brought back to life. In what felt like forever, restrictions eased, and it was much safer for people to go out. They could be seen in parks, offices flooded with people, restaurants were packed, streets were full of cars and people, and no one was at home anymore. Now, the world has changed to a colourful, vibrant and lively place. Long after, zero cases reached countries. What once felt like a dangerous place to live in turned to such an accomplishment when there were no Covid-19 cases. There were words like ‘together’, ‘free’, ‘calm’, ‘happiness’, and other positive words flooded the earth. Most importantly, the word ‘hope’.

The song and sound effects of thunderstorms help put the person watching recall their lives living in darkness when the situation was worse. However, the vibrant and lively music afterwards turned thing around, and made it feel like the world succeeded though this Covid-19 pandemic. This made me recall a quote ‘After darkness comes light.’ This relates to the story as it connects on how we lived through a very dark and tough period of time, where everything seemed to not move forward. However, we persevered and supported one another, and eventually we could return to our normal lives again. The graphics of the colourless scene in the first part really described how dark it was during that time. Contrary to that, the colourful and bright scene brought the dark moments back to life. The main message ‘Hope’ was brought up at the end of the video. Everyone had hope to survive through the pandemic although it was tough. Many setbacks and circumstances stood in our way, but most important is that we have hope to get through this pandemic, and we are. It was effective as the music and graphics helped put me back into the situation that we lived in before, and I felt that I was transported back to all the good and bad memories from that time that I experienced. The ending part with the word ‘Hope’ reminded me to continue having hope that all of us will work together to fully get through this Covid-19.

Hope

It tells the story of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and how life was like when it first began. As shown, everyone was feeling very "hopeless" and "anxious". Almost everything had to be closed down and the streets were basically empty. However, it then shows the world going back to normal. People are back out and about and are able to socialise with others.

The music was very suitable for the story, first starting out with a gloomy tune, which conveyed hopelessness and despair. They also utilised sound effects such as thunder, to make it sound more jarring. Once things changed, the music became hopeful. They used sound effects such as birds chirping, signifying a new day, as well as the sound of car engines, signifying people being able to go out. The use of colour contrast was also very effective, with the story first starting out being told in black and white, but then becoming full with bright and cheerful colours. Lastly, the visuals were done so that it showed the clear comparison of before and after the COVID-19 Pandemic at the same locations. This story's purpose is to tell people that things do get better, as long as everyone has hope, we can make it through together.

site: The Deep Sea

I enjoyed scrolling through this website a lot. As someone who loves the ocean and science, I really liked the way the site uses scrolling to help readers visualise how deep the ocean actually is and what houses strange creatures at any depth. At first, in shallow waters, I could recognise most of the creatures there and they were pretty 'normal' looking. However the more I scrolled and the number of the depth increased, the more strange the animals started to look, to the point where I was interested enough to google it! The time spent scrolling also helped me to realise how deep the ocean actually is, and how these animals are even able to survive in such deep waters and under so much pressure. The story told about the Trieste made me feel very uneasy as the sentences in the site were very short, providing emphasis on the fact that it was very dangerous and no other elaboration is needed to make the reader feel the same fear as the two men who boarded the submarine. It makes readers feel amazed that people are willing to go for dangerous adventures just to make new discoveries. The interactions the reader has to make (scrolling) and the visuals makes the story much more enjoyable to read.

I chose The Boat.

This story is about a girl who left her family and became a refugee to escape after the Vietnam War via boats. The story shows how tough it was for the refugees during this point of time, how many fell sick and died on their journey to different countries to escape. The main character, Mai, was one of the refugees. On the boat, Mia met a boy who reminded her of her father. Mia can be seen as someone who deeply misses her father, and she saw her father in the boy. Mia cared for the boy when he got sick, even more than the boy’s mother. When she thought he was getting better, he had passed away. Mia was confused as to why this had happened. Nevertheless, her and the boy’s mother hurled the corpse of the boy out into the sea, as far away from them as possible.

The story is told through transmedia, an interactive website, via text and comic panels.

This way of telling the story was effective for me as I could feel that I was immersed throughout the whole journey. There was sound and images included, which could make me understand exactly what was happening. There was also movement as well, for example the images and text would shake, which showed the situation the main character was in. These made me able to clearly depict the situation and emotions of the character, hence, it is effective.

Site: HOPE

I chose this story as it tells and shows me what the world was like during the Covid-19 days. Through this story, I can see how Covid-19 has affected the world with the increasing cases as shown on the globe. However, towards the end, the number of cases reduced as everyone played their part for a healthier world.

It started by showing the number of increasing Covid-19 cases around the world. Thus, people felt anxious and were in fear.

The animations and the globe also showed how social life was during Covid-19. Many restrictions were implemented to help reduce the spread of the virus such as wearing a mask constantly, emptier offices for social distancing, and many more. This was for the best but unfortunately, people were unable to hang out often like before. Multiple keywords were also shown.

However, as people always say after rain there is a rainbow, the world was filled with joy and happiness again. Covid-19 got better and the globe showed 0 Covid-19 cases which means everything was back to normal just like it used to be.

It was effective to me as I was able to relate to it. It had happened to me in real life and I know how sad it was to not be able to go out, work, and play. We could not do anything due to the lockdown and were stuck at home for a whole 2 months. I felt so helpless as everything was restricted. Thus, this story was effective for me as I also had hopes that Covid-19 will be gone and everything will be back to normal.

Hope

This story tells me about how COVID-19 made a huge impact to the world. At first, everything was in black and white. The depressing background music and the thunder sound effect played a part by making the vibe feel depressing. Words such as ‘hopeless’, ‘chaos’ and ‘stuck’ were used at the beginning to describe everyone’s thoughts and feelings when they were going through the pandemic. COVID-19 infections kept increasing in every country. Restaurants, streets and offices were empty as everyone had to stay at home to prevent themselves from catching the virus. Later on, things started to change. Everything became colourful, there were happy music playing and birds chirping in the background which indicates a new beginning. Everyone’s daily life were continued and everything was back to normal.

It was effective to me as I was able to relate when I read the words in the beginning. I felt those emotions during the pandemic and was struggling to cope with my studies. However, at the end, there is a strong message about hope. It gave me reassurance that we should always be positive with any challenges we face.

1. I chose The Boat.

2. It tells the story of Mai and her escape from the dangers of the Vietnam War.

3. The use of black and white colours conveyed how solemn, scary and dreary the situation was for the people onboard the boat. The way the pictures swayed as the story progressed, along with the loud thunder that roared through my headphones, made me feel like I was there with them, scared of what might happen next and hoping for their safety. The simple sound effect of the water splashing, accompanied by the picture of a dead body being thrown overboard, really hammered home the fact that this was a recurring reality for the actual Vietnam refugees. It was especially painful to hear it a second time when Truong’s lifeless body was thrown into the sea, just as they had finally had a sliver of hope upon spotting land ahead of them. The three prominent characters met by a strange twist of fate, yet they all acted as important roles to each other. Mai was a pillar of support for Quyen, who was trying care of her estranged son, Truong, who unintentionally supported Mai mentally as he reminded Mai of both her father and mother. This made Truong's death particularly heartbreaking and the ending more impactful for me.

Site: Adventure Time Distant Lands

The website tells the story of BMO - a robot who goes on an adventure through space and time in a 'wild west' style as shown with the cowboy hat. As various objects and their buttons are pressed we get to 'talk' to BMO and they laugh with us, creating a surreal and light-hearted comedic tale of BMO's adventures alone. We as the audience are also able to access his face as a screen with creative simple pong game and a beatbox maker. This website tells a creative and fun story through the interactive medium like a website to get to know BMO as a character. The vibrant bright colours of the environment also reflect the cool unique design of the show, which helps to establish the adventurous moods of the story, and the creative designs are also unique to the main show itself. The story is told as we click and interact with various objects on the screen like the ukelele and the cowboy hat. The ukelele, with the beatbox maker in BMO's interface gives us the information about BMO's character as a musically inclined person. BMO's responses through the various interactions also give them depth as a fun, bubbly character through their chuckles and laughs. Which contrasts the stereotype of the robot character usually being monotone and aloof- this makes the audience connect more with the story. This storytelling medium tells the story in such an apt manner because it involves the audience in interacting with the character, allowing us to understand them as a character on our own accord, as compared to more conventional storytelling mediums such as film and books.

The colours used are black and white which conveys a serious tone for the story and there are also sound effects added at certain parts to drive the story when the user is scrolling. I also found it interesting that there are visuals used that follows a comic strip style and during climatic parts, the individual frames
shift according to the sound effects. It also keeps me engaged by having a change of moving visuals, and the play in the contrast of colours as the story moves along. During more intense parts of the story, the overall scene colour changes to black instead to set the mood. Other than scrolling and following the flow of the site, there are also additional buttons available to read up on another side information about the storyline. All in all, this site has managed to keep me engaged while telling me an interesting story at the same time.

Site: Hope

This story is about the lives of people affected by Covid-19. The first half of the story is about how life was like during the pandemic, where people could not go to work and people isolated. The second half of the story shows people back at their workplace, eating together and socialising, which is when the situation started to get better.

The site told the story through colours, describing the world during the peak of the pandemic as black and white, one that felt sullen, void of hope. This contrasts the world shown post pandemic, where the world is bright and colourful, which makes one feel very positive about the world. The story is also told through the audio chosen as more intense music was played during the first half, showing the seriousness of the situation and thunder effects was being used. However during the second half, there is a lighter mood as the music becomes more melodious and there are sound effects of life, such as birds chirping and human chatter. It was effective for me as it influenced the way I felt, making me hopeful for a world post pandemic and want to strive for things to go back as how they were.

It shows the struggle of rebuilding an already struggling country way before the earthquake.

It tells the story through an interesting way through a little bit of animation, pictures, snippets of videos of the country. Having the visual aid the website provides helps me to connect better to the story. I connected with it because it reminds me of my own hometown back in the Philippines. Unfinished houses, teenagers carrying heavy buckets, roofs used as a place to dry laundry. Having the visual aid along with reading the text in the website has reminded me of how similar life is like in some parts of the Philippines too.

At the end of each chapter, the website asks you questions about how you might handle the situation of Haiti.

Site : Hope

The story is about how it was really dark when Covid-19 first happened. However as time went by, Hope was found and the world became brighter if everyone came together to overcome it. It told the story in the way of a video. The timeline also shows it went from white into something colourful. It catches a lot of attention and it shows progress. The first half of the video everything was black, white and grey and it shows how miserable life was during covid-19. But the late half of the video shows colours and how life became brighter as everyone came together to overcome the down spirit of covid-19.I like this as not only the colours caught my attention but the music throughout the video. Personally I feel like the music plays an important role in storytelling as without the music it will not catch my attention as much. Hence the way they tell the story is really effective through the use of drastic change in colours and music.

I read the rest as well and in comparison they are more interactive than this website.

I chose the site 'The deep sea'. It shows the different type of marine life at different depths of the sea. It also shows how the living conditions become more extreme the deeper it goes, such as temperatures dropping to near freezing temperatures, and barely having any light at all.

It tells the story very simply by showing the depth and the type of animals living there. Occasionally, it will describe the type of living condition at that particular depth. It will also have some facts on some of the marine life, like how most creatures emit light due to how dark it is when it is very deep. I feel like it is effective as even though it is simple, it is very understandable and informative, without needing to write too much. The pictures of the different creatures are also a great addition to the story as it shows us what the creatures look like instead of needing to search it up.

It then shows large numbers marked on the map. This entire story is about COVID-19. It shows how it affects a lot of people, and how it resulted in the lives of people. It is seen that office people is now working from home, and there is less interaction out of home, with no cars or people walking out on the streets. However, after things have stabilise and people are getting used to the “new normal”, people start visiting the streets again and office workers are seen working in their office. This is shown in the video with a transition of colourful trees and a switch in mood and music background. I feel that the change in colour tone and its background music really affected the entire mood and can allow empathy in the scene. The words that portrays, like togetherness, openness, and hope shows the entire story that everyone has gone through.

I chose the website, Hope. The story told was about Covid-19. The words like hopelessness, stuck, pain and many more were shown, showing what were people’s feelings during Covid-19, especially during the early times. The large and scary number of positive Covid-19 cases that were counted and accumulated that reached millions, with the highest shown was 87,410,874 cases from the United States of America. As the rotating Earth was zoomed in, streets and workplaces were empty and bare. One person was also seen walking alone with his dog. Later on, the story showed a colourful and vibrant Earth where everybody was out, working and interacting face to face. It was the normal Earth again where the rotating Earth had 0 cases everywhere and words like happiness, free and hope was shown. The daunting music, the thunder sound effects and the balck and white colours of Earth was effective as it made me think of how scary and plainly terrifying it was for me and everyone else when Covid-19 was on the rise. It reminds me of how unfamiliar it was to stay at home 24/7 for about 2-3 months as Singapore was on lockdown. Wearing masks, social distancing and Trace Together was the new norm. No one could travel internationally, everyone was just stuck at where they are. It was hopeless to think about when Covid-19 was going to end because new and high number of cases were updated everyday by the government. It was as if it was a blur experiencing Covid-19. HOPE. I think that was what kept everyone going to try their best to live as normal as they could during the pandemic. This story made me remember how it was during 2020, where I felt unhappy and stuck, hoping that it would end as soon as possible. Honestly, the pandemic caused me to not remember much about 2020, where Covid-19 was peaking. Looking at the bright side,, even though Covid-19 is still present right now, times are definitely better right now as measurements are more eased and people are more happy and are stronger as they have adapted to the tough times together.

I chose the story, Hope. The story doesn't have many words but mainly tells a story through visual. Through the story, it tells the timeline of the world as we were hit and going through the pandemic. The story is split in half, the first half is monochromatic, showing negative words, dead trees and empty roads. In the second half, the visual is reversed, but instead this time, there is a pop of colour in the world, with stores and streets filled with maskless individuals, ending off with the same spinning globe, but this time with positive words orbiting it, showing that the life we enjoyed before is restored. I really enjoy the message of the story, that while it's called "HOPE" it's not necessarily showing just hope for the future, but instead that our hope has prevailed for some of us. That someday the world will go back to the way it was before. The simplicity and relatability of the story makes it appealing to a larger audience. I also like the that the story can be understood even if you didn't go through the pandemic, or even if you did and already got over it. All these combine to make a holistic story, from the content to medium.

Site: The Deep Sea

The site tells the story of entering the deep waters and the possible encounters that follow. The user is able to scroll down and follow the journey of what it's like going deeper into the ocean and what one would be able to sea (see, haha). The background also gets darker as one goes deeper, which makes the story more realistic. Besides showing the sea creatures and their names, the site also gives additional information like the zones at different depths and more details about the marine life. The site also includes the accomplishments humans manage to do; Ahmed Gabr dived 332 metres the deepest a human has ever dived (2014), Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached Challenger Deep on January 23rd, 1960 the deepest point of the sea. By adding what humans have done, I think it makes the story more exciting and it feels like I'm brought into the story.. that if they could do it I could be able to do it too! I noticed that it is stated that Challenger Deep was reached 9 years before the moon landing, and more people would know about the moon landing. I find that interesting because most of us would find going to a place out of where we belong (since the Moon is out of the Earth) more interesting then diving deeper. Could this suggest that we fear digging deeper into ourselves? That we would prefer looking at others and forget about ourselves?

But in the end, Y5 exposes Hugo that he is the villian. They undergo many dangerous obstacles with questionable decisions made by BMO. The reason why it was effective to me because it shows me determination from BMO and Y5. No matter how hard the obstacle is, they will try their best and conquer it. There was perseverance from Y5 on wanting to expose Hugo's plan too. And without teamwork, this mission would not be successful.

Site: Adventure Time: Distant Lands - BMO

It tells the story of BMO, his personality which we can access like a computer. It's lighthearted, much like BMO is in his appearances in Adventure Time, and gives us a little background to the fact that 1. He loves potatos 2. He is saving the world this time and 3. He is still pretty goofy.

We can access a bunch of games which he has on inside him, watch the trailer for the show which he has downloaded. As well as play around with his hat and guitar a little on his spaceship. It fits the theme of him being in space and his general situation of being a robot. Also as someone who has enjoyed Adventure Time, seeing BMO enjoying himself in space makes me glad as these are some of the last times we get to see the cast. Seeing what is essentially an epilogue brings me a lot of joy as a fan. It probably drove a lot of excitement "hype" for the show before it released, as it did for me and now it continues to drive traffic to see the show after it has concluded.

The site I chose was The Deep Sea

it tells an informational story about the history and discovery of the deep sea, how some species of fish are able to survive in the deepest depths of the ocean and how humans have yet to triumph over these depths. It teaches us that there is so little known about the ocean, how every expedition to it leads to new discoveries, and that more humans have been to the moon than the deepest depths of the ocean.

The story is told through the reader scrolling deeper and deeper into the ocean, showing less and less as the reader scrolls to show how little life there is in the ocean, Along the way there is text giving the reader more information, such as the name of the layer and some extra information on the species of fish, One particular one that stuck with me was how the 'Big Red Jellyfish' has a red coloration because red is the first to leave the spectrum of light as we get deeper and deeper. It was effective for me because I am a visual learner, so having pictures of the species of fish be shown really let the image of the fish be stuck with their name and how deep they live.

The story concluded with the deepest part of the ocean that humans have ever been to, and a summed up journey of the Trieste Submarine.

The site tells me about what creatures there are at certain levels of the ocean, some facts about the sea creatures and also true stories of how deep the Titanic ship sank and the story about the two men trying to reach the bottom of the ocean.

The story is told by scrolling down the site by doing this I feel that it is effective as you scroll long enough but there is still a long more way to scroll it shows and is able to make me feel that the ocean is really deep. The one part where they say that I have scroll the height of Mount Everest also made me visualise better as I have seen picture of Mount Everest but not pictures of the deep ocean.

So the site I chose was The Deep Sea, and for a good reason. As a child, I was in love with animals, and the ocean was filled with so many mysteries regarding animals. The site told a story in which a lot of information was conveyed. Along with that the story told was interesting in the fact that it felt like an actual story building up to a climax, and the way they show how deep the ocean goes really gives that kind of vibe.

From the site, as the ocean starts off light with general creatures who don’t seem that scary and they looked like normal animals you’d think of that live in the ocean, like polar bears, velvet crabs and clown fish. But as the ocean gets deeper and deeper, not a lot of light passes through and it gets darker showing scarier creatures like the anglerfish, Japanese spider crab and drilled shark. However, this overall intrigues me at how accurate this reflects a story. As the story goes on, there are twists and turns that take effect and there’s a build up to something big (or bad).

The site I chose was "The Boat". This website had the most interesting and engaging storytelling technique in my opinion. I initially thought it was just a story about someone surviving a storm but it dived in deeper to talking about the Vietnam War (1975-1977).

The story was about a young girl Mai, having to escape from the sufferings under Communist Vietnam by boarding an overcrowded boat with minimal supplies. There with Quyen and Truong, they try their best to survive the turmoil of the ship in a storm.

Through scrolling and clicking on the sub-sections of the graphics, it allowed me to better understand the stories of Mai, Quyen and Truong. Backstories on how they ended up having to escape via a boat that was overcrowded, how they prevailed through a storm with minimal food supplies and engine power.

Another interesting technique they used was the sound effects. We could hear the storm, water splashing and coughing / wheezing effects to tell that the situation back then was really bad. They also made the graphics/texts move and flow with the story (for example at the beginning when it was describing the storm, the drawings and texts were swinging violently) and that complimented well with the addition of sound effects.

Lastly, at the very end they included an informative text page about the Vietnam War, reminding us that what we just witness was a true event and also letting us know the approximate amount of people who did not manage to escape. It made me want to read up more about the war and educate myself.

Story: Adventure Time: Distant Lands

It tells the story of BMO trying to save another planet through interacting with BMO and the items around him. BMO is shown on a spaceship which implies that he is still in space, just like in the trailer. The story was told through the many different activities you can try like BMO’s potato pong or BMO beatmaker and interacting with BMO by dragging things to him or clicking his buttons. These activities introduced BMO to people who may not be familiar with him, that he likes potatoes and is quite playful. The trailer is added as one of BMO’s interactions such that once the person has an idea of BMO’s personality, the context of the trailer would make more sense to them. It was effective to me since I was not very familiar with BMO and the interactive activities gave me an idea of how BMO’s personality is like. I also found the concept of the website to be cute and engaging since there are lots of interactions and activities instead of just the trailer.

i chose the BMO site. The site has many interactive games and also the trailer. for the trailer, it tells a story of how BMO is supposed to save a land that is about to be destroyed. Furthermore, a preview into the adventure he goes through with the other characters. This is effective as it makes the audience anticipate the movie and want to watch it. Furthermore, there are many interactive games like the potato pong and BMO beat maker, which allows the audience to know more about BMO's personality and connect the audience more towards BMO. For the potato pong game, it is really addicting as it is hard to win especially when the round becomes long and the potato ball becomes really fast. It is effective as i ended up sitting there for very long trying to win the game... Moreover, the BMO beat maker was also interesting and fun to play. There are many different beats and sounds to create many different songs. There is also the BPM slider, and i think thats a good feature as it also allows people to create different songs as well. Overall, i think this site is effective and very fun. it allows me to learn more about BMO's personality and allowed me to build connections with the character, which causes me to want to watch the BMO movie more.

story: hope
This story tells us how the COVID-19 pandemic has made a drastic impact on our lives, and how many people around the world were feeling helpless and hopeless when the pandemic started and when the COVID-19 cases started to rise dramatically. This can be seen through the animation of the rotating earth where words of hopelessness popped up, and numbers representation the covid cases of each country rose. Afterwards, a black and white animation of a city which was barren and quiet could be seen, illustrating that COVID-19 had cause businesses and offices to close down, resulting in many negative inconveniences for people, and some may even have lost their jobs or income during that period. However, soon the same city was seen again but in colour this time, with business going back to usual, office workers filling up the offices and shoppers strolling along the streets. This shows that the pandemic has tied over, everything is now in a new normal and things are starting to become more positive since colour was used. This story is effective to me since it shows how we must hold on and not give up during tough and gruesome times, and that we need to stay resilient and keep fighting, enduring the "storm" for one day it will end and the light of the end of the tunnel would appear.

Site: Hope

The story showed us how’s an everyday life of a global epidemic is like. We are still in the stage where covid-19 is evolving and where we live on eggshells where every moment somewhere in the world, someone is suffering. So many cases and death, that most of us actually is numb by that feeling.

The setting of the site is pitch black, and depressing glitched keywords [white] begin to follow and fade out as the story proceeds, a sphere of lighter saturated black appears which is the earth the lands are black and the oceans are shaded in grey the polar southern end is dye white. The main topic appears for a few frames and some flags of countries appear with numbers shown as millions. It slow zooms into a land and a quiet street with not much traffic, there’re shadowed figures quick to disappear. The setting moves from a restaurant to a computer cafe which is both empty, proceeding on to a room where one is glued onto the screen, then outside where trees are withered and only a man walking his dog in this dark night world.

A change of setting that encourages us to look beyond into the future where we all surface back to our life before the pandemic. A new day comes and the whole atmosphere changes the earth is filled with colour, the trees and grass are green, the sky is blue, and people are socialising without masks. The story re-tracks back, the room is empty an office of people working on computers, to a restaurant filled with customers, the streets have frim pedestrians and the road has more cars. The earth is back to its legend colours; the land is green, the ocean is blue the southern pole is still white. Countries flag is dyed back and the count is zero. The world is back where words that a frim and positive are shown; unity, law, emotion, and capital letters of hope remain, gratitudes and a motivational quote remain.

Quoted at the end; “Let's try and keep things in perspective. Let's be smart, help each other out, and we will get through all of this. In the history of the world, there has never been a storm that lasted. This too, shall pass.” there’s no need for an explanation of the quote, it has explained itself.

Read more [details of history from flu during in WW1, and events of WW2 to the Vietnam War] Many casualties in generations yet the past able to survive through it all. And now where social media and the advanced technologies in the medical field are there, where most places are bonded on media, we, humans will get past and leave history behind for the next generation era.

My condolences for “In memory of all the lost lives during this pandemic and
with gratitude to all the medical workers.”
