Southeast: The southeast region of the United States includes states like Georgia, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Usually when referring to "The South" this is the area being talked about. It experiences rain throughout the year. The temperature is pleasantly warm during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. The weather is hot and humid with a lot of area with rich soil. Some freezing rain may fall in the Virginias and Kentucky. However Florida and states closer to the equator rarely get any. The winters are just mild and short.

Southwest: The Southwest region includes states such as Arizona, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. This is the hottest region of the United States. It also has the highest rainfall. Winters are generally short, but some freezing rain may also appear here. The spring and fall seasons are the longest with excellent weather along with summer which is the hottest reaching temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.

The topography of the South is varied due to the large amount of land it covers through 16 states. A common feature in the South is the mountainous environment, influenced by the Appalachian Mountains and other smaller mountain ranges. Valleys can also be found in these states because of the mountainous areas. The South also contains many forests. Water is a common thing to find throughout the South Many of the states are located either on the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and/or contain rivers, Many states also include swamps, marshlands, and bays. This location on the water could be potentially dangerous to the inhabitants of the area, because of it's low, flat elevation; some places in the south are located below sea level, and water hazards like hurricanes are very threatening to the area, and can cause flooding. Not only does the South contain many watery areas, but it can even contain sandy areas, even out of near desert areas like some places in Texas. The South also contains the large peninsula that is Florida.

The south is in the lead with a population growth of 14.3% over the past decade. The population is at about 38 thousand for the region. Although the rumors say that the South is all farmland, it is actually very urbanized. This creates places for people to go and things to do. After the Civil War the cost of living decreased causing more people to move there. An estimated 37% of the United States population live in the South. Life expectancy for men is about 81 years old and for women it's about 86 years old. Many people migrate there after retirement to get away from the harsh, cold climates of other areas in the country.

In the 20th century things changed for the South. There was a growth in the service and technology industries. Tourism has increased in Florida as long as around the entire Gulf of Mexico. People love the warm weather and fun atmospere, so they continue to take trips to these sunny states. Multiple automobile production plants have opened up along with research parks. Some of the most watched television networks are shot in the South such as CNN, TBS, and TNT. Because of so many booming businesses, the South has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the United States. All of this and more helps contribute to the growing economy of the South. The GDP of Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee is 40515.67. Although it seems like the South has it together, they are ranked with some of the poorest states in the U.S.
