The strike started due to the poor working conditions and wages that workers received back then. The fact that workers were risking their lives every day and didn't even receive enough money to pay for their highly-inflated cost of living, led them to no choice but to go on an organized strike. 

   About 30,000 workers left their jobs and went on strike, and several forces like the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were ordered to stop them, but many men in the forces ended sympathized with their cause.
