Specifically, I am in charge of making a social media post about Claudio but with a modern touch added to it. Throughout the play, Claudio was portrayed as a very honorable man who is deeply in love with Hero. They first met in Messina when he returned from the war along with the Prince, Don Pedro. This was an  important scene because it shows the first encounter between Claudio and Hero. They were constantly glancing and smiling at each other with eyes that undeniably show that they had feelings for one another. Despite meeting many women in his life, “In mine eye she is the sweetest lady that ever I looked on.” Since this was the first impression I had of Claudio, I decided to translate this special moment between him and Hero into a modern text that can be displayed through a social media post. Most people use social media to share about their lives and special moments that they want to keep record of. With this being said, my first social media post is about Claudio talking about his first day in Messina and his brief meeting with a beautiful girl, Hero. Claudio described Hero as “a modest young lady” and thought highly of her by saying, “ Can the world buy such a jewel.” These statements made by Claudio show how he cared and cherished Hero like a beautiful jewel. In addition to Claudio’s post, I included a modern interaction between Claudio and Don Pedro, who gave him advice and support in marrying Hero in the play, as a way to portray how helpful Don Pedro is in modern day like he was in the play. Don Pedro understood and supported Claudio “...if you love her, for the lady is very well. If thou dost love fair Hero, cherish it, and I will break with her and with her father, and thou shalt have her.” In the play, the two came up with a plan that consisted of Don Pedro pretending to be Claudio in order to figure out if Hero liked Claudio. After adding some modern twist to it, the comments were centered around Claudio asking Don Pedro for information about Hero to be able to contact her. Don Pedro gave Claudio Hero’s social media account to help them contact each other and an invitation to a party that Hero was going to. In the play, Hero and Claudio jumped to marriage without getting to know each other first. Unlike the old days, most couples get to know each other for years before getting married. Since this post is taking place in the modern day, I decided to show that Claudio and Hero were going on a beautiful date. Their first date was on a serene beach with candles around a table where they were able to spend time together. On the second date, Claudio made a screenshot of a real social media post that was about a gorgeous garden in the Netherlands since Hero wanted their next date to be at a garden place. Claudio seemed like the type of boyfriend that would do anything to please his girlfriend, so he took the initiative and searched for a beautiful garden to take his girlfriend there. Despite the very limited personality that Hero had due to gender roles, I changed Hero’s personality and allowed her to express her emotions more freely since women have equal rights as men in the modern day. She expressed her gratitude and love for Claudio since her eyes were filled with love and happiness whenever she saw Claudio in the play. Throughout the play, the idea of being in love was very different compared to the modern world and temporary since it was not true love. A universal theme that everyone has encountered at some point in their lives is to not judge a book by its cover. In the context of the play, Claudio decided that Hero is his wife the moment he met her due to her appearance without getting to know her like picking up a book because of its alluring cover without reading its content. Although one might blindly feel that their love is enough to be with someone for the rest of their life, they need patience and time to get to know someone thoroughly to decide if their love is truly sincere.

Claudio portrays a more major role than other characters, so I wanted the playlist to feel like something for a main character. For each song, I wanted it to be relevant to different parts of the play and match his personality. I wanted to pick out love songs because of his relationship with Hero. "I had a dream that we would meet", this line comes from "Forevermore" and it shows the love at first sight archetype that happens in the play. Another line that shows this is "But here, face to face, a stranger that I once knew", from "Astronomy". But with love at first sight, also comes problems as we know. One song I thought showed the issues they encountered was "Wurli". It really captured how he felt when the drama first started happening. The line "And you got jokes like you don't need love," expresses how Claudio felt when he thought Don Pedro was trying to take Hero for himself.
