After highschool, I plan to become a biology major at OCC. After hopefully just two years at OCC, I then plan to transfer to UCI. I want to go to UCI because they have an amazing biology program. At the moment right now, I am not too sure if there’s a specific field of biology I want to go into. Most likely microbiology, but I think I’ll figure it out after OCC once I’ve dipped my toes in each of the different sub-fields. I have thought about having the same career as my mother. She is a nurse for labor and delivery. The job seems very rewarding, but extremely intense and I'm not sure if I can handle all that.

My graphic novel is a bit different from most graphic novels in America. My graphic novel is a Japanese manga which means instead of reading from left to right like how most books are formatted; manga is read from right to left. In fact, if you try to read a manga the American way, the “first” page is a warning page made to alert the reader that they are actually starting at the end of the story. The warning page also explains the correct order of reading the panels and dialogue bubbles. Mangas are printed in their original Japanese format because they want to preserve the orientation of the original artwork. I personally really like how these are formatted because it slows me down and forces me to really look at the pages and retain the information I am reading.

How Kids are Viewed in Society: 2-8-2020

In the graphic novel I am reading, the main character, Conan, is a very successful teenage detective that everyone goes to whenever there has been a horrible crime. One day, he gets jumped and forced to take a pill that is supposed to kill him, but instead, it tuns him into a six year old boy. As Conan figures out how to live his new life as a six year old, he realizes that since he is a child, no one takes him seriously. This negatively affects his ability to solve cases because the police don't listen to his useful tips; which makes sense because why would they listen to a six year old? Every time, Conan is correct about his hunches, but no one listens to him because he is only six years old. This relates to our society because adults never take children or teenagers seriously. Some adults believe they are much wiser than us kids and refuse to listen to what we have to say. Of course I understand why they think that, but it is so annoying. We are never taken seriously for about seventeen years of our lives and then RIGHT when we turn eighteen we are forced to make all our decisions on our own without any help.

This songs really stands out to be because it is about society's unattainable beauty standards. The line "Wish I was like you, blue-eyed blondie, perfect body." really resonates within me because growing up that is what I wanted to look like. As a little kid, I saw mostly white blonde girls being represented in media and I was always confused as to why I didn't look like them. "I'm no quick-curl Barbie." is my favorite line because back then Barbie dolls all looked the same. Today they have many Barbies as different races and hair color, but I vividly remember staring at my Barbie dolls and wanting to look beautiful like them.
It's just so sad that there are so many girls out there purposely starving themselves or hurting themselves just because they believe it's the only way to get people to like them. The very last line of the song, "I WANNA BE OKAY." hurts me so much because we believe that we have to choose either being mentally okay or looking gorgeous. Why can't we all just be okay and happy with ourselves?

People around the world are fighting in supermarkets over rolls of toilet paper and hand-sanitizers. All of this craziness and leaving people with the question, "How did we get here?" or worse, "Who is to blame?" The Corona virus originated in Wuhan, China and unfortunately spread to other parts of the world. Due to its origin and the way media has been portraying the virus, racism towards Asian people, especially Chinese people, has increased significantly.

And I was absolutely correct. Everything is fine now and none of it really mattered at all. My pain stopped and I am now happy again. Things are much better now. How long till another thing happens to ruin my happiness? I don't know, but it doesn't matter. I am just going to focus on the present and enjoy it while it lasts. As long as I remember that I have people who will always support me even through my bad days, then I know I will be okay!

Gender Roles: 2-21-2020

In the graphic novel I am reading, the genders roles are heavily enforced. The father of the story is very focused with work and has a very fragile masculinity while his daughter stays at home to cook for him and keep the house tidy. Whenever the daughter tries to help the father out with work, he gets defensive because he refuses to believe that a girl could do his job. This relates to some aspects of society. Fortunately now things have changes, but there are still many people who believe in these very specific gender roles. There are some men out there that refuse to ever ask help because they want to look tough. My dad is a prime example. He NEVER asks for help. Once he cut his hand really bad, but he didn't want to ask my mother for help so he ignored it and later passed out from blood loss. It's very important that we let the upcoming generation of men know that asking for help from time to time is always okay!

I don't really listen to country music, but my best friend does. She's the one that introduced me to this song and when I first heard it, it really resonated within me. The song is about knowing your worth and not letting anyone treat you like you're just worthless loose change. It's about letting go of those people that don't value you the way they should. To me, this is a very important message. I feel like I have spent too much time with people that have made me feel like nothing and after hearing this song, I realized I deserve so much more and I'm sure many other listeners feel the same way.

Technology plays a big part in the graphic novel I am reading. Since the main character, Conan, is a man in the body of a child, he has to use advanced technology to help him get by. For example, he has a gadget that changes his kid voice into an adult voice so he can try to get adults to actually listen to what he has to say. Although most of the devices in the story aren't very realistic if has got me thinking about the future and who knows! Maybe we will have some crazy inventions soon. Pictured below and some of Conan's secret gadgets.

Use of Dialogue Bubbles: 3-10-2020

My favorite part about graphic novels are the dialogue bubbles. It really makes the story more entertaining. When a character speaks with a pointy star like bubble, I can HEAR the character YELLING and I think that's really funny. The different kind of text bubbles is a really smart way of conveying the diction of the character and the emotions they are feeling. The size of the bubbles also plays a big part in story-telling. I love it when a bubble takes up most of the page because then I know the character is absolutely SCREAMING! It is definitely more interesting to read than regular dialogue in regular books.

It has been announced that school will be closing until March 28th. I didn't think this was actually going to happen. I am honestly really scared. My parents aren't letting me leave the house anymore and I am going to miss my friends so much. I wish I went to school on Thursday, but so much was happening and I know it would have been a bad idea to go to school, but that's time I could've used to see my friends that I will never get back. Yesterday was also a bad day, but when the last bell rang, I told myself, "It's okay. Monday will be better! You can talk to Mrs. Barro and she can help you out!" But now school is closed and it sucks because I really need an adult that I trust to talk to right now. Being trapped at home is going to suck.

I think this song is also really helping me get through this whole quarantine thing. I haven't stepped out of my house since March 13th and I am kind of going insane. But I guess I just "gotta let it happen." This song reminds me that I have been through a lot and I managed to survive which means I can definitely get through this situation.

Importance of Social Distancing: 3-25-2020

With everything happening in the world, social distancing has become very important. Social distancing means to keep space between yourself and other people. The main thing about social distancing is to try to stay at least 6 feet away from others and to not participate in any gatherings, This is the best method we have to avoid spreading COVID-19. Viruses can be spread through physical touch, coughs, sneezes, and more. Social distancing greatly lowers the chances of being infected because coughs and sneezes don't usually travel as far as 6 feet. I truly believe that if we all practice social distancing, this nightmare will be over much faster. Unfortunately, not everyone is practicing social distancing which puts more people at risk.

The graphic novel I am reading is all about solving mysteries. Most of the time, the police always try to take the easy way out of solving a murder by saying it's a suicide. Which is a fair assumption because most of the time the crime scenes do look like legitimate suicides. However, the main character, Conan, is always thinking and sees things the police don't. But whenever he tries to tell the police his theories, they never believe him because they're way of thinking is too simple and they only focus on what's more realistic. A lot of people in the real world think like this. Most of the time, we are too lazy to actually do our own research. So, if we are told something and it seems to make sense, we most likely believe it. We don't dig around and try to learn more like Conan does. We are just stuck inside the box. Like this kid pictured below :)

Since I have so much time now haha, I began to watch this new TV series, Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist. The show is about a woman, Zoey, that can hear people's inner thoughts, but only in the form of songs. Whenever people around her are hurting, she can hear them singing about their problems and it's her duty to help them. I really love the concept! It got me thinking as to what it would be like if it was actually real. What song would I be singing? What songs are other people singing? I guess the show kind of teaches people that letting other people know about our problems can really help us. Even though the people in the show didn't purposely tell Zoey how they were feeling, it just kind of happened because of her power... she ended up helping them. Wow. Maybe I should start talking about my problems to someone.

In the graphic novel I have been reading. The father character, Kogoro, has a gambling problem. His addiction is the reason why his wife left him and also negatively impacts his daughter's life. I do not personally know anyone with a gambling addiction so I don't completely understand how someone can be addicted to gambling, but it seems to be a very serious problem. The type of gambling the character does is betting on horse races and pachinko. Betting money on things that are just chance and not even skills based seems... well... not smart. The odds are always against the player. But that doesn't stop Kogoro from gambling away his life. Even though his daughter tries so hard to stop him, he won't.

我只在乎你 by Teresa Teng: 4-9-2020

This is one of my favorite Chinese songs. Teresa Teng wrote this song because of a real even that happened in her life. Her song is about the love of her life that she was supposed to marry. Unfortunately, her fiance's grandmother was very old fashion and did not like that Teresa is a singer. The grandmother told her Teresa that if she wanted to get married to her grandson then she would have to give up her super successful singer career. This song is Teresa's way of begging her fiance to not leave her. I am not entirely sure, but I am pretty sure she did not end up marrying him because she did not want to give up her career. The story is so sad and really represents Chinese culture. We value family and honor over everything. For women, our way of bringing honor is by being good housewives and not having a job. I do love how Teresa still stuck with her career even though it meant being heart broken.

Many lives were cut off short in these graphic novels which makes me realize that I need to start living. Although that made be kind of hard right now since I am not even allowed to leave my house... at least my mindset has changed a bit. Once all this is over I plan to really live life (in a safe way of course). But maybe I'll go out more and spend more time with friends instead of staying in because I'm "tired." I need to make the most of it. Woah. It kind of just hit me that I am going to be an adult soon... In like 15 days. My childhood is ending and I don't know if I really made the most of it. I wish I valued my time more before the quarantined happened.

So naturally, I immediately listened to the song and lo and behold... it made me cry too haha. I feel like this song is very relatable to teens. The song is about always being someone's last choice. Even when you give someone all your love and attention, they only show it back at night time when they are desperate to be loved. I used to have someone do this to me. They would never talk to me during the day, but then in the middle of the night they would call me and I always picked up because I cared so much about them. What I should've realized is that person didn't really care about me. Whenever I needed them, they were never there. I know for a fact almost all of my friends and peers have had this happen to them. Who knows... maybe I was once that person without even realizing it.
