This ecosystem is based in the bathypelagic zone of the ocean (1,000–4,000 meters deep), known as the “midnight zone.” It is home to unique organisms adapted to cold, high-pressure, and low-light conditions. The water is saltwater, with no connection to freshwater sources. Seasonal changes are minimal but may involve slight shifts in food availability due to sinking organic material from the surface.
