I posted a bit about my position and my previous church in the perusal. I think I am in the homesick monologue category, though I used to be much more in the misplaced hope category.

I think someone like the eco-activitist-turned-orthodox-convert Paul Kingsnorth would be super firmly in the Homesick Monologue category. He would entirely reject everything stemming from the Industrial Revolution onwards and advocate a drastic reversal back to a pre-industrial era, initially for environmental reasons but increasingly for spiritual ones. I imagine he would definitely reject the experiences of media users as tainted by the Machine.

I went to a seminar 'Using AI in the Church' run by another church in our city that fitted well into the Misplaced Hope category. They used Claude to write all of their children's and youth group materials, sent sermon summaries generated by ChatGPT, every church email is written by ChatGPT, as are their safeguarding reports, they are recording a podcast on the 'power of prayer' that is two AI agents discussing prayer with no humans in the conversation, the pastor writes and records songs using 15 second clips of him and some lyric suggestions that an AI platform turns into songs, and they are discussing the possibility of a church AI agent to be on the pastoral team to spend time with the elderly congregants. There was no theological reflection, just a vague comment that if the tools exist and make jobs easier they should be used.

I think my current church probably fits best into the Anxious Inaction category. We use very little 'new media' but there is not very much justification for not doing so, even when there are obvious places where our mission might benefit from doing so. Digital tech doesn't really get a look in.

I'm not sure I know anyone wholly in Misplaced Hope. There'd be some who fit into that category when thinking about a particular tech, but probably not wholesale. A number of new initiatives keep arriving on socials - trying to connect with young people in snappy ways about Christian faith (the Way UK, Lumina, etc.) but it'd be overreaching to say they're putting their Hope in media.

As mentioned on Perusal, I can often feel the nostalgia and anxiety around technology/new media. I like the usefulness but feel the negative impact (or 'environment') and worry for my son growing up in a 'digital world'.
