I had fun designing this padlet and enjoyed pulling together ideas on how society talks to us about our bodies. According to the dictionary, the word 'object' refers to 'something that makes you feel a specified emotion' and 'something that your attention and interest is directed toward.' In the padlet the word 'object' is related to the body because we feel something when we look in the mirror or at advertisements that tell us what healthy looks like. Society and the individual direct a lot of focus towards the body whether passively or assertively. Does the opinion of my body belong to me or society? Do they agree with each other? How do I find out? Selfies are one way we gain opinion on our body and position it as an object in the photo. This padlet aims to present the body as an object of social identity. The social constructionism of our body through fitness marketing images can oppose the natural larger body types and enforce that any lack of a certain body type displayed in imagery is due to lack of effort, control, and discipline. My body becomes an object that I shape. We compare objects and we compare bodies. The two primary thinkers included in this padlet are contemporary social theorists. Mary Douglas strongly links the body as a metaphor for society. The way our body is reflects the society we live in. I included Michael Foucault because the fitness world has produced certain truths on what healthy looks like. Also I am interested in how Michael's body was a social object as it is referred to in most of his bio's as having HIV Aids. It seemed appropriate to have a French thinker that is not subject to the culture of fitness that dominates the west. The selfies are included because this is a recent social phenomonen that I believe has superseded the mirror and caused society to 'like' or 'comment' on bodies. The motivation for taking a selfie may be because the person can control the way project their image to society with their own hand operating the camera angle. My body becomes an object that relates my sense of self to society.
