Similes are comparisons between two things and normally use like or as to compare e.g.
Miss Farnell was quick like a fox.
Miss Rowley was as wise as an owl.

Today we are continuing our learning about similes and metaphors. You can refresh your memory with the song from yesterday.

Today we will be focussing on metaphors.

Metaphors do not use the words as or like, they say one thing is another e.g.

Miss Farnell is a star
Miss Rowley cried a river of tears.

In this second example, tears aren't really a river, but it is saying she was crying so much it seemed like a river.

Please watch the video on this website to help you understand metaphors some more. You can also complete the activities on there to secure your learning.

Match the beginning and end of the metaphors from the sheet together in your books.

If you're feeling very brave, have a go at writing your own metaphor.

If you would like to do this activity, you will need the following:

Half a large plastic bottle or other tall container.
Paper to wrap around the outside.
Small stones (enough to cover the bottom of the bottle)
Compost.
Food scraps e.g. vegetable peelings.
Worms.
Shredded paper.
Thin fabric and something to secure it.
Water.

Please wear gloves when handling worms, make sure you treat them with respect and care.
