this chapter is about a boat that comes onto Ghalasat. Karana’s men come down to shore ready to fight. Then captain Orlov tells Chowig that they want To hunt sea otter.

I think the agreement is fair because captain Orlov gets Half because he hunted the sea otter and Chowig gets half because it’s his island.

Chapter 2

Captain Orlov set up camp on Ghalas-at. Then Chowig told captain Orlov about the island. Then the saw that captain Orlov's aleut hunters were spying on them. Then one day they saw a whole school of white bass and they didn't share with the aleut hunters so they new they would bring trouble to Ghalas-at.

*I think the tribes the tribes will not get along because the aleut hunters are spying on chumash. And the chumash didn't share their fish with the aleut soldiers.

Chapter 3

This chapter is about aleut hunters hunting sea otter. Karana explains why she's sad about the sea otter getting killed by the aleut hunters. Every hour they brought news to each other. They spied on captain Orlov and his hunters to make sure he didn't leave the island. Each night Chowig worked on making a new spear.

I think it is unethical for the aleut hunters to hunt the sea otter because its not their island and its unkind to kill a living creature and use it for your own benefit.

Chapter 4

This chapter is about a war between Captain Orlov and the Chumash. Then Chowig made deals with Captain Orlov about what they get. Karana saw her father laying on the ground with blood on his face. Then a puff of white smoke came from the deck of the ship and five warriors fell. Then the aleuts took out their knives and more warriors rushed down. Warriors fell and came back up to fight again but some didn't come back up. Chowig lay on the beach with the waves washing over him.

I thought he would do someting bad because in the book it saysChumash didn't share their fish with the aleuts.

Chapter 5

This chapter is about the Chumash in bad fortune. Their life changed so much the women have to do the hunting, their is a new chief. They were so sad that they felt sick. Everyone wanted to move to a new island. So Kimki decided to go to a country and build a place for the Chumash to live. So when Kimki left everyone was worried and wondered if he was going to come back.

I dont think Kimki will reach a new land because Captain Orlov could still be driving his boat and they might attack Kimki.

Chapter 6

This chapter is about the Chumash waiting for Kimki's return and the white people coming. There would be a watcher looking for Kimki but they never saw him. So they made an escape route just in case the Aleuts come. Their escape route was made with seaweed going down the cliff and some canoes filled with food and water. Then one night the watcher saw the Aleuts coming so he told everyone pack up and escape so everyone rushed to the canoes and waited for the watcher then the watcher came back and told it wasn't the Aleuts. The watcher said it was white people. Then the white people said Kimki told us to come here.

I would feel scared to follow them because i dont know them and they could just be lying. And they could be pretending to be someone and they could be the aleuts.

Chapter 7

This chapter is about Karana's brother getting left on the island. Everyone packed up their stuff and put it in a basket to carry it. Then they went into the canoe and went to the big boat. But Karana's brother forgot his spear so he went to go get it. Then everyone was on the boat but Karana didn't know where her brother was so she called for him but he didn't answer. Then Karana cried and said we need to go back then others said he will be fine there is still food. So Karana went to go get him and then she was on the island with him but when Karana arrived at the island the boat was gone.

If my little brother was left on an island all by himself I would go swim for him and say to the people on the boat wait for me and my brother to come back.

Chapter 8

This chapter is about Karana's brother that died from a pack of wild dogs. Karana and Ramo just thought about when the boat will come. And then Ramo talked about him being the chief of Ghalas-at but Karana said the rites to be a man. The next morning Ramo wasn't in the hut so Karana looked for him but she didnt find him. But when she was walking she saw a pack of wild dogs circling Ramo which was dead. She saw wounds on Ramo's body so she picked him up and brought him to the hut. Then she thought how she would get revenge on the dogs.

I think Karana will get revenge on the wild dogs. And maybe try to build a big boat and find Kimki or just find new people to live with to not ne lonely.

Chapter 9

This chapter is about Karana making a home and burning all the huts to make her feel better and not sad. Karana made a fire next to each hut to burn them and she burned them so she dosen't have to think about it. Then Karana looked for a place to live at on the island that is safe from the wild dogs. Karana also looked for weapons to fight the dogs m. She found a club in one of the huts but she needed a spear and a bow and arrow. Then she found a spear from the slain dog and it was good for hunting fish. Then Karana looked at the chest from the battle but the chest wasnt there so she dug in the sand and she found the chest but there was another wave and it filled the hole with sand so she dug again and then got the chest. Then she thought if it was still illegal if she made weapons. Then she started making her own weapons to protect herself. Then she practiced using a bow and arrow. Then after she practiced she practiced she gathered kelp and then made a bed and then slept. Then she just watched all the animals and looked around to see if the boat came.

I think it's ethical because no one was on the island and she needs weapons to protect herself and I think it's unethical because she's probably gonna come to the new island and the people are gonna see her weapons she made and she might get in trouble.

Chapter 10

This chapter is about Karana trying to reach the new island that everyone is at. Karana looked around if she saw the boat but then she saw something that might've been the boat but it was just a whale. Then she killed 3 wild dogs with a bow and arrow but not the leader then the dogs left. Then Karana decided to go to where the canoes were and then left the island. When she was far out in the sea the canoe had a crack but then she patched it up. Then she decided to come back to the island because she thought she would not make it so she paddled and then blue dolphins swam next to her and the dolphins encouraged her and then she made it to the island and she was happy but tired so then she fell asleep on the beach.

If I were Karana I would somehow train the whale quickly how to make it go where I want it to go. Then I would be able to use the whale like a jet ski.

This chapter is about Karana finding a place to build her home. She woke up on the beach and grabbed all her tools. Then she decided to never go find the country that everyone is at. Then she looked around the island for a place to build her home. Then she looked for materials to build her home. And then she walked and sang and said today is a good day to build a home.

I think Karana should make her home in the cave because she will have protection from wind and rain.

This chapter is about Karana building her home. She found bones so she used them for her fence . She looked for tall trees because once the island was covered in tall trees. Then the wild dogs came and chewed on the fence. Then she made shelves to make her food safe. Then she wondered how she can kill the wild dogs.

I think Karana is doing good because she is building her home by herself, she is killing some wild dogs and she is making her own weapons.

Chapter 13

This chapter is about Karana trying to kill the sea elephants. Karana thought about what could happen. Then Karana went to the cliff and saw all the animals. Then she shot and it went straight but then the sea elephant moved and the arrow missed. Then the sea elephants followed her and then she backed up and then tripped and fell on rocks.

I think Karana's leg will hurt more because she is walking and ussaly when you dont do anything with your injury it hurts more and I think Karana will make a band aid out of a leaf and rope and she will maybe wash her injury in the ocean or a pond.

Chapter 14

This chapter is about Karana making a home in the rocks as her second house. She walked back to her house and she wouldn't leave until her leg is fine. Then she ran out of water she then went to a ravine to get water. But then she saw the wild dogs she tried to shoot one of them then the dogs left. Then she went to a cave and she made a home so she was safe. Then she went back to the place where the sea elephants lived and she found bones from the sea elephants and then she made some weapons then she was ready to fight the wild dogs.

I think she feels confident and brave because she now made two spears and she has already killed some of the wild dogs so she doesn't have to kill lots of them.

Chapter 15

This chapter is about Karana Taking care of the wild dogs leader. Karana thought what the leader dog was. Then Karana made a fire and threw it into the cave. Then the dogs came out the cave and she shot two of them. Then the next day she made more arrows. Then she saw the leader dead on the trail. So she picked him up and brought him to her house to cover the wounds. Then each day she would give him a piece of fish. But one day she didn't see the dog outside but he was just inside stretching himself. Then she named the dog Rontu.

I think Rontu is going to get a collar from Karana thats made from wood and string and his name is going to be on the wood. And Karana might make a bed out of animal fur and seaweed or a dog house.

Chapter 16

This chapter is about Karana fixing her canoe she had abandoned on the shore. She thought about what she would do if the Aleuts came so now since she thought about that she must make an escape. She then worked on the canoe she had abandoned on the shore. After it was finished she wanted to go see what it was like when it was in the water so then she tested it. When Karana talked to Rontu he ignored her because she was looking at a devilfish so she then pointed her spear at the devilfish so it would get scared and go away.

I would have been friendly because I need someone to protect me and help me hunt animals and I would also need him because if i didn't be friendly I would have just been lonely forever.

Chapter 17

This chapter is about Rontu fighting the wild dogs. She found some sea elephant teeth so she made a spear. She went to coral cove but Rontu didn't come because he was outside the fence but then when she came back Rontu did not return. Then she thought what would happen to him but then she heard the sound of fighting. So she went to go find him and then she found him. She also saw the wild dogs making a half circle in front of Rontu. Then they started to fight each other and Karana just watched them fight. Then Karana went back to the house snd she saw Rontu just sitting like nothing happened.

I think Karana shouldn't have helped Rontu because if she shot the wild dogs the wild dogs would have chased her and bite her.

Chapter 18

This chapter is about Karana making stuff and flowers are blooming. Karana saw that flowers were blooming since the winter rain. Then she saw birds flying on to her house. Then she made a wreath for Rontu's neck.

I would not like to visit the island since there are the possibilities of not surviving because there are aleuts, wild dogs, and maybe some more other animals that are deadly.

Chapter 19

This chapter is about Karana trying to kill a devilfish. Everyday she would go put the canoe in the water and look for a devilfish. Karana gathered abalone shells for the winter. Then she went to find a devilfish and then she found one. Then she made a hook weapon with a sinew line and a hook made of abalone shell. Then she attacked the devilfish trying to kill it. Then the devilfish wrapped it's arms around Rontu's neck. Then she stopped because she didn't want Rontu to get seriously hurt.

I would have not tried to kill another devilfish because if I just keep trying to kill another devilfish Rontu will get hurt from the devilfish.

Chapter 20

This chapter is about Karana seeing the aleuts coming to the island. Karana gathered more abalones. Then she got curious about a hawk so she went to were the hawk lived. Then when Karana was in the cave she saw a figure that was a skeleton. Then she paddled out of the cave not looking back at them. Then she saw the aleuts coming so then she hid her canoe and she packed everything up so she can hide. Then she went into a cave and blocked it with rocks.

How long has Karana been on the island?, is she going to upgrade her house?, is Karana going to make a dog house for Rontu?, how old is Rontu? Is Rontu going to join the wild dogs again?

Chapter 21

This chapter is about Karana finding a mysterious girl. She went outside only when it was night time she had also did not bring Rontu. Then she made a skirt out of feathers. Then when Karana was in the cave she heard the sound of footsteps she looked at it and it was the girl. Then Rontu walked toward the girl and Karana cried so she called Rontu then he came back. Then the girl said wintscha pointing at Karana's skirt. Then one night when Karana was heading back to the cave she saw a black necklace that was a flat rock that Karana used for a step.

I think the girl left the necklace because she wants Karana to earn her trust and be her friend or she set it up as a trap so Karana likes her and she can tell the aleuts to go attack Karana.

Chapter 22

This chapter is about Tutok not coming back to Karana. Karana decided not to sleep in the cave because she thought there was a trap. Then she saw the girl and decided to hang out with her. Then when she was gone Karana wanted to make something for her in return so then she decided to make a circlet. The next 5 days she came back and Karana gave the circlet she made for the girl. Then one day the girl did not come so then she just waited then she went to sleep. Then the next she also did not return then she wondered what happened to Tutok.

I think Karana became friends with Tutok is because she made a necklace for Karana so then they started liking each other.

Chapter 23

This chapter is about Karana taking care of a sea otter. She saw all the sea otter that the aleuts had injured and then Karana killed the wounded sea otter. But then she saw a sea otter that was young and not as hurt as the other sea otter so then Karana decided to take the young sea otter and put it into a small little pool of water. Every day she would catch some fish for the sea otter. Then Karana decided to name the sea otter and the name was Mon-a-nee which meant little boy with large eyes. Then when it was 3 days before Karana can fish for the sea otter she went to the pool that it was in and it was deserted then she knew that she can't see him because his wounds healed and he looked the same as the others.

I think Karana took care of the otter is because She might of felt bad for it and it was wounded and she was kind've lonely because Tutok was gone.

Chapter 24

This chapter is about Karana meeting Mon-a-nee. It was spring again and many birds came to the island. Lurai Tainor built a nest in a tree with dry seaweed, leaves and Rontu's hair. One time the birds picked Rontu's hair when he was playing in the yard this he did not like so then Rontu hid from the birds. Then she found a white gull so then she took care of it and she noticed it wont walk because it's not old enough. One day when she was filling her canoe with abalone she saw some otter playing and then she paddled toward shore and she saw an otter chasing her then the otter dove into the water and appeared in front of Karana and then Karana was sure that it was Mon-a-nee. So then she held up a fish that she caught and Mon-a-nee snatched it out of Karana's hand. Then one morning she saw that Mon-a-nee had 2 baby otter. Then Karana threw another fish for Mon-a-nee. Then Karana decided to name Mon-a-nee Won-a-nee . Then after Karana was friends with all her animals she decided to never kill another animal.

Animals are important to Karana because sometimes she becomes friends with them and sometimes she uses it for eating, string and teeth for weapons.

Chapter 25

This chapter is about Rontu dying. Karana made some weapons and then hid them in a place just in case if the aleuts came then she would be ready. Often Karana and Rontu Would go to a rock and live there for a couple days and she would fish for Won-a-nee. Then one summer Rontu died she then remembered all the times with Rontu. And then she went to go look for Rontu. Then she saw Rontu's paw prints. She then followed the paw prints and then she saw Rontu in the back of a cave laying down. She heard Rontu breathing slowy and that night it was to dark for Karana to bring Rontu back so she just slept in the cave. Then it was dawn and then she picked him up and brought him back to the house Rontu was very light as if something had already left his body. Then she put her hand on him and felt his heart beats but suddenly there was no more heart beats. Then Karana cried and buried him on the headland.

I think Karana will live sadly since her first friend she had since she was lonely had died because she brought Rontu almost everywhere she went like when she goes hunting.

Chapter 26

This chapter is about Karana finding a replacement for Rontu. Karana made some snares out of branches. One day when she was going towards the sea elephants she aaw a dog that looks like Rontu's son so then she decided to use her snares to catch him. Then when she set up the snares she caught several wild dogs but not the one that looked like Rontu. Then she had an idea which was to make a mixture of sea shells and wild tobacco. She then put it in the cave and waited for the dog she wanted. Then the dogs came and drank the water then they all fell asleep. She then looked for the dog like Rontu and then she saw it. She brought him back to the house and tied him to the fence and left him some food. Then she thought of some names then she came up with a name called Rontu-Aru. Then they started to become friends.

She badly wants to see her family because she has been on the island for a couple years lonely and her life would be so much safer with people.

Chapter 27

This chapter is about an earthquake on the island and causing a tsunami. The air was so heavy it was hard to breathe because it was so hot. Then after the heat Karana decided to take her canoe out and paddled around the reef and to the sandspit. Then one day she got awakened to the sound of thunder but when she looked in the sky she saw no thunder.then she saw two giant waves. Then she climbed to the cliff. Then it was night and she was afraid to go back home because she thought the cliff was the only safe place. Then the next day she saw dead Sea animals washed up on the shore. Then she saw Rontu-Aru waiting at the fence.

Karana thought there was an earthquake is because she heard a sound of thunder but when she looked in the sky she saw a clear sky.

Chapter 28

This chapter is about Karana seeing a ship coming towards her. After the earthquake she had noticed that the canoes had been destroyed . So then she decided what she is going to do. Then she decided that she will find planks that had been broken off from the canoe. Then Karana built her canoe and one day she saw a ship in the distance. She then examined the people who were on the boat but she couldn't see because it was to far. Then Karana didn't know what to do either she should hide or tell the people to pick her up. Then the men came closer in a canoe but then they found her fire. Then she Went to the place where her ancestors camped and thought of the happy times. Then she heard no yelling so then she thought that they had gone so then she checked and they were gone.

I think her people was on the ship and I think they will not come back because the people on the ship didn't see anyone on the island so they might think that there is no one on the island.

Chapter 29

This chapter is about Karana leaving the island. She saw the ship coming back to the island. And since she saw men and she was single she put clay on her face as a sign that she was not married. Then a man came to her and talked to her. Then the man made her a dress but Karana didn't want to wear it. She then tried It but she did not like it Because she didn't like it's color and it was hot. Then she asked one of the men what happened to the ship that had taken her people. Then Karana remembered all the times she had.
