In 1880 a Lakota girl named Four winds was forced to live on the Great Sioux Reservation with her family. One day she was taken away from her family and forced to go to a boarding school run by whites. At this school, she was taught to forget all about her Lakota traditions and language and was forced to assimilate into the western culture.

I chose this story because I was curious to learn more about Native Americans and the terrible events that they had to endure when white settlers came to take over their land. I really like this book because it tells the truth of what Native Americans went through in a way that students are able to understand. With this book, students will acquire a knowledge of the elements of Historical Fiction. Students will learn about cultural assimilation, the culture and traditions of the Lakota people, and the Fort Laramie Treaty. Learning about these topics will help students have a better grasp of the story and Lakota people. This story is rich with history but also has descriptive writing with similes and metaphors. Students will do a deep dive and analyze the main character Four Winds and many other characters by doing the Hot Seat activity and character collages. Students will participate in discussions like Big Paper/Silent Conversation. They will also learn about the Sign Posts strategy, aha moment, and see how this affects the decisions of the main character.

The Fort Laramie Treaty was an agreement between the Sioux Nation, which included the Lakota people, and settlers. The treaty stated that the Lakota people had to stay in the Black Hills reservation of the Dakota Territory and give up all of their acres of land. Settlers weren't allowed in this area and Lakota people weren't allowed to leave. However, this treaty didn't last long due to General George A. Custer who ended up finding gold in the Black Hills which resulted in the Sioux Nation moving to reservations located on the prairies of present-day South Dakota.
Runs with Courage is set during the time this treaty was in motion. Students will skim through the pages of the treaty and observe, reflect, and question and write down their findings.

Winter count was a way to record moments, usually drawn on buffalo or deer hide, in history using drawings that have specific meanings to that year. In chapter 16 the girls at the boarding school created their own winter count recording moments of their year.
Students will choose one of the drawings from above on the winter count and write a short caption, 1-2 sentences, using concrete words, phrases, and sensory details to describe the image.

Reading your summary reminded me of a history class and project I took a few years ago. Just as you summarize, the Native Americans suffered to unimaginable extents. I also recall how Native children were taken to an all-white school to "properly" educate them. As a result, they lost their native language and traditions. Your lesson is packed with great content and exciting hinge activities.
I am looking forward to reading this book, great selection!
Thank you for sharing.

Hi Galy,

I love the novel and the message it gives. It will really allow students to learn more about Native Americans and what they went through. The novel is great for students because it's written about a girl, so they can really put themselves into her shoes. Your lesson plan is very well put together. The graphic organizer the students will use will be a great tool for them to dig into the story. I can see you wrote how you will model it to them and work with them together! I really enjoyed reading the second hinge activity. It's amazing that the students will have the chance to look at a historical piece. I really like that you have provided a visual art into your lesson. Thank you for your work.

Hey Galy,
I will be stealing this idea because I love the book, lesson idea and hinge activities that are incorporated. This allows for students to learn more about Native Americans and the struggles that they faced. The hinge activities you incorporated are effective because they showcase the Treaty and winter count. Those were crucial moments to history. I like how you used visual art which will help students analyze and interpret the piece. Love the content you used and I am looking forward to using this for my future teaching. Thank you for sharing!
