Jacob Lawrence was a prolific painter who is recognized as one of the great American artists of the 20th century.

Born in New Jersey in 1917, Lawrence spent much of his childhood living in Harlem. While his mother worked, Lawrence attended an after-school program, where he received his first formal training in art via the artist Charles Alston. Through these experiences, Lawrence was exposed to many of the most important artists and writers of the Harlem Renaissance.

By the age of twenty-four, he had created more than 170 paintings, including some of his most important works. Lawrence’s most recognized series of paintings is titled The Migration of the Negro (1941), which consisted of 60 panels depicting the lives of African-Americans during the Great Migration. He completed the work with the help of his future wife, Gwendolyn, who would collaborate with Lawrence throughout his career.

Lawrence painted with a unique style that he called "dynamic cubism", and his work would be displayed in museums and art galleries across the world. He died in 2000 after having spent close to 30 years as an art educator at the University of Washington in Seattle.
