College football attracted larger crowds than professional football did. One college athlete that was widely known was Harold Edward "Red" Grange. He was the first ever athlete to appear on the cover of Time magazine. After a game against Michigan, students carried Grange on their shoulders for 2 miles. Grange ended up going pro with the Bears in 1926.

William Harrison "Jack" Dempsey was the Babe Ruth to boxing. In 1919 he won the world heavyweight title from the giant Jess Willard. Dempsey knocked him down 7 times in the first round. Dempsey then became a national celebrity and a rich man. He was very popular with the working man because he too had been poor and worked his way up.

Babe Ruth is arguably the best baseball player of all time. He changed the game with the way he played. Kids today still point their bats to the imaginary center-field fence and practice their home run swings. Ruth set so many records that kids today dream about breaking.

A modern day Babe Ruth would be Derek Jeter. Like Ruth, Jeter also played for the Yankees. Derek Jeter retired from baseball in 2014. Jeter is also a huge role model to up and coming baseball players. Players today aspire to be as great as "The Captain." Derek Jeter is a fantastic person on and off the field and is the perfect example of a modern day Babe Ruth.
