While the Morales is checking the people on the bsu, Miguel realizes that Elena is in the bus and gasps. Javier helps Miguel and Elena get to their coyote and help them get off and on the train when the mata gente come and shows Elena and Miguel some trick for the mata gente to leave them alone with out robbing them and raping Elena etc. They go to the boot stand to find their coyote, and when he talks to the person selling the boots he explains that he was supposed to cross the border a long time ago but he got delayed. It took Miguel a while to convince the man in the stan that he was one of the people who  had to cross the border, and was sent from Don Clemente. After while of walking through the desert and resting Moises, Javier, Miguel and Elena hear a car engine and they stay quiet, then they realize that the militia killed Moises and now they have to go through the desert based on what Moises thought them. When they killed Moises they shot him on his right shoulder and the bullet went through Elena's gallon of water leaving Elena with no water. Miguel goes to graduates high school and College while Elena only graduates high school and goes back to San Jacinto because the north wasn't like she imagined and decides to go back and take care of her grandma. Towards the end of the book her grandma dies and Elena and Miguel contact each other through the phone and send each other pictures.
