LO: To equip students with the underlying principles of sustainable packaging design and how it can help reduce global waste generation and address climate change.

Overall idea: The session will start with a brief presentation on the impact of packaging waste on the environment and the principles of sustainable packaging design. Then, students will participate in a hands-on activity to design and create sustainable packaging using materials such as cardboard, paper, or biodegradable plastics. 3. General research: students undertake guided research into selected countries to learn about how climate, weather, employment, farming, life at school etc have been affected. 30 mins.
4. Visual research: students are each required to capture one key word and one image which represents the knowledge they have discovered. 15 mins.
5. Drawing and design: students each plan their embroidery square by drawing onto paper. 45 mins.
6. Learning stitches: students learn 3 basic stitches using off cuts of fabric, before applying it to the main embroidery. 60 mins.
7. Application of stitches: students apply their learning of stitches to create a textile made up of 1 key image and 1 word, using stitching and felt. 60 mins.
8. Collaboration: as a group, students consider the best composition of all 30 pieces of embroidery to create their own class 'Coat of Protest' using an old woollen coat from a charity shop.  15 mins.  (Following the lesson, these are then attached to the coat by a teaching assistant working with members of Art Club.)
9. Presentation: students create a short presentation to their year group, with one student wearing the coat and others contributing information, ideas, hopes and feelings that are revealed in the individual embroidered panels.  This forms a collective, peaceful and awareness raising protest through the arts. Planning 30 mins, presentation 15 mins. 
TOTAL 5 hours learning time.
