He goes from being what we could consider depressed, to a happy teenager who has found themselves and their true friends. He starts out as a freshman in high school, but at the end of the novel his freshman year is over and he's actually smiling for once. What made him change would be his friends, specifically Sam and Patrick. They treat him like how a friend should be treated and allow him to be happy and do what he wants. A year before this Charlies old best friend committed suicide so he was alone coming into high school besides his popular sister. Sam and Patrick tell Charlie that he is a wallflower and that he is good and to not listen to anyone telling him differently. Charlies best friend Micheal Dobson committed suicide a year prior to when the events started in the novel. Charlie always seems to have reflectings to him and his old friend, and I got the message that Charlie is afraid his suicide could have been prevented by him. He was too late to save his best friend and now I think that burns up inside him, especially when Sam is making him a milkshake when he unintentionally as high as a kite. One major external conflict for Charlie would be (SPOILER KIND OF?) the relationship between Patrick and Brad. Brad isn't out yet to the school or his family yet, therefore, their love must be a secret which Patrick understands, but eventually things start falling apart and this destroys Patrick. Charlie tries to comfort his friend but he really has no control over Brad's decisions and what will happen to their relationship. Charlie in what I see as fear in losing another friend comforts Patrick in any way, even allowing Patrick to kiss him after Patrick has a breakdown. I would have always been having breakdowns, and though he did I believe he put on a stronger face. If I were Charlie I would have fought for Sam a little bit more and I know saying that is easier said than done but I always root for love in novels and I wanted them to be together from the beginning to the end. If I were Charlie I would have told Sam and Patrick a little more of how I truly thought. Charlie has many internal conflicts with himself and I think if he would have just shared his feelings with them besides "us" because this is like a diary in a way, he would have felt more relaxed especially with dealing with Mary Elisabeth.
