What is Bank Day?

The Virginia General Assembly declared the third Tuesday in March as Bank Day back in 1991. This program gives high school seniors a behind-the-scenes look at banking, financial services, and career paths—while showing how banks strengthen their communities. After participating, students write an essay about what they learned. Fourteen scholarships totaling $28,500 will be awarded based on these essays!

Scholarship Breakdown:

 6 Honorable Mentions: $1,000 each

 6 Regional Winners: $2,500 each

 Statewide Runner-Up: $5,000 total

 Statewide Winner: $7,500 total

How It Works:

 Students must be Virginia high school seniors with a 3.0+ GPA.

 First Sentinel Bank will host students on March 3 during the school day for an interactive session about banking and community impact. Student attendance is required for scholarship eligibility.

Students will also receive access to VBA’s Bank Day Resource Webpage in March to help them prepare their essays.

New Peoples Bank is excited to partner with the Virginia Bankers Association Education Foundation (VBA) to offer your seniors a unique scholarship opportunity in March called Bank Day.

What is Bank Day?

The third Tuesday in March was declared Bank Day by the Virginia General Assembly in 1991. The high school student must meet one of the criteria listed.  The applicant can mail or email his/her application and FAFSA to me in the address in my signature.

Recipient requirements are listed in an order of priority:

to be a child or dependant (including a spouse) of a coal miner

a disabled coal miner seeking a degree

a person seeking a degree in a field reasonable related to the promotion of coal mine safety and health

a high school graduate or GED certified.

Please tell about yourself, your goals and why you deserve to be awarded this scholarship. You may include any information about your background, achievements, educational and career objectives, how the scholarship will help you achieve your goals or other statements that will assist the selection committee in its efforts. 1. Scholarships are available to qualifying students who reside in the Counties of:

A) McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, and Wyoming in West Virginia

B) Bland, Buchannan, Giles, and Tazewell in Virginia

A complete application includes the application, essay, signed letter of recommendation, and a signed transcript. 

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Academic Standing:
  Must be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. 

• Athletic Participation:
  Must have participated in three (3) or more varsity sports during their senior year.

• Enrollment Status:
  Must be a current graduating senior enrolled in a 2-year college, 4-year college/university, or vocational program. 

• Conduct:
  Must demonstrate good character, leadership, and sportsmanship both on and off the field.

Application Requirements:

Applicants must submit:

• List of varsity sports participation (including years played)

• One letter of recommendation from a coach, teacher, or school administrator

• A short essay (250 - 500 words) describing how participation in athletics has influenced their academic and personal growth

*Preference is given to students entering an agricultural/animal field, but is not restricted to that field.

*Work with the Fair and associated activities is given preference

*Winners are selected by faculty/guidance members of the school

*Awardees will be notified and will receive checks when the Fair receives written notification of enrollment in college, trade school or university.

Essay: We ask the students to write a brief essay on how they will help improve life in our community. Give an essay telling how you are going to help our communities be better by helping to lessen the ills of everyday life.

The funds are to be used by the students for extra items that are not normally covered by a scholarship (Gas, Vehicle upkeep, books, personal items, etc...)
