Controversial

One of US President Wilson's Fourteen Points

• drew upon one of US President Wilson's Fourteen Points, "open diplomacy, rejecting secret treaties and negotiations behind closed doors."

Issue of Disarmament

• another aspect of the Treaty of Versailles was disarmament, demands public making after 4 years of complete war

Colonies

• also addressed the colonies; point of view of colonized must have equal weight as the colonial power

National Boundaries Redrawn (geopolitics)

• "those who fought alongside the allies demanded recognition"
• pressed for an independent Arab Kingdom
• Ho Chi Minh sought Vietnamese liberty from France
• "Pan African Congress petitioned for Africans to take part in governing their country"

Missing from the Conference

• Germany wasn't present; it relied on US meditation for the peace it wanted
• Germans didn't take part in the conference but invited in May 1919 to come later; there wasn't any dialogue, only through writing
• British Prime Minister David Lloyd George &  US President Woodrow Wilson felt French Prime Minister Georges Clémenceau was being too harsh on Germany

Signing of The Treaty of Versailles

• June 28, 1919 signed at The Hall of Mirrors in Versailles (a symbolic date as it was the anniversary of the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and a symbol place as the Hall of Mirrors was where the unification of Germany was proclaimed in Franco-Prussian War)

Conditions of Treaty of Versailles on Germany

• Germany lost a tenth of its population
• 13% of its territory in Europe
• lost all of its colonies 
• lost part of its army
• German public felt it was unfair
• "Article 231" was found to be particularly humiliating--perceived as forcing Germany to accept full responsibility for causing the war
• sum of reparations remained to be decided = the actual amount Germany had to pay to countries it invaded 

"the reparations issue became extremely inflammatory."

• Germany faced a height of inflation; economic crisis
