Strengthening Relationships by Northumberland

This padlet and workbook will explore how healthy relationships are key to having strong connections, reducing daily stress, and increasing feelings of happiness. Families and relationships: they're not always easy. Arguments in any relationship are normal and they can be healthy but when they become intense and you can never seem to resolve them, they can have a negative impact on the wellbeing of us and children. This should be used with a parent and a professional to work through together.

Something small, cup of tea, a walk with children

Challenge yourself -Setting yourself realistic goals and challenges, whether at work or outside, such as learning a new language or a new sport, can help build confidence. This may help you deal with stress.

It can also make you want to do things and be active.

Help other people -Evidence shows that people who help others, through activities such as volunteering or community work, often become more resilient.

Try to be positive -Look for the positives in life, and things for which you're grateful. Try writing down 3 things that went well, or for which you're grateful, at the end of every day.

We often can use these unhealthy habits to provide quick, temporary, relief, but they fail to address the underlying stressors and can lead to negative long-term consequences.

It is important to remember if supporting any person or yourself to change it will take time, understanding and often accessing support groups or the GP.

Remember pointing out the problem over and over or trying to tell them what to do, could make the situation worse. Sitting with that person to understand the underlying stress can start help.

For the science behind stress and the effect it has on our brain listen to this Tedtalk.. click here

It can be difficult to talk about things that are bothering you but it is important to keep communication going.

When we interact with others their words and behaviour will make us think and feel things that will trigger by our past or present experiences.

For example, we may see a person looking repeatedly at their mobile phone when we are spending time together. If you have had past experiences with this or have feelings of being ‘taken for granted or ignored’, then this behaviour may cause you to become angry, criticise, become defensive or ignore that person. These underlying feelings and behaviours can result in a negative cycle, if you do not address the issue.

Try and get into the habit of thinking about how someone's behaviour or communication makes you feel, being honest about that feeling and then explaining why you have reacted in the way you have at the time. You can apply this process to any issue you have with anyone. This is about explaining how you feel. This will begin the process of resolving the conflict, by allowing each of you to see the other’s perspective
