Malaria also known by it's scientific names Plasmodium Falciparum, Plasmodium Knowlesi, Plasmodium Malariae, Plasmodium Ovale, and Plasmodium Vivax. Malaria is caused by a transmission of parasitic infection from an infected mosquito. The saliva of the mosquito is passed through the bloodstream and inserts the Plasmodium parasite. Specifically the female Anopheles mosquito transmits Malaria, while the male mosquito feeds mainly on fruit juices. The areas that are affected from this disease in the body are the blood, immune system, the liver and the spleen. The symptoms for Malaria are severe fever, sweating, vomiting, chills, and damage to the blood, kidneys, blood, brain, as well as the liver. While anyone is capable of getting Malaria, it's more common in those that travel in areas that are more common with the specific mosquito and have high cases and Africa being one of those places. Children and pregnant women are shown to be more vulnerable in the places that have high malaria cases. Although Malaria can lead to death, there are also antimalarial drugs that are oral treatments for this disease. Preferred by the CDC are aretemether-lumaefantrine (brand name Coartem) and atovaquone-proguanil (Malarone), quinine, and mefloquine. Ways you can protect yourself from Malaria is wearing the proper clothing during the months that are more prong for mosquitoes, using insect repellent, and sleeping under mosquito nets.
