The Dior perfume advertisement features a striking image of Charlize Theron. Here she portrays a prestigious, high-class European woman dressed in an elegant, gold-colored gown. The setting suggests a vintage, sophisticated atmosphere, possibly a classy bar or a luxurious hotel foyer. Her pose accentuates her curves, and her outfit and accessories match the perfume bottle displayed in the left corner which mirrors the shape of the perfume bottle pictured to the left. The elongated neckpiece of her gown complements the perfume's design, enhancing her sense of poise and confidence. The camera angle maintains a direct focus on the model, particularly highlighting her body, which dominates about three-quarters of the ad's right side. Her blonde hair is tastefully styled with sultry smokey eye makeup, and she gazes intensely into the camera, exuding confidence. Illuminated by background lighting, she becomes the center of attention, signifying her allure and radiance. The sole text "J'adore Dior" confirms that the only thing you need to know is the name of this perfume and you must love or adore it as that is what J'adore means "I love or I adore". (Miller, 2021)

The underlying message appears to celebrate this beautiful and confident lady, suggesting that using the perfume can evoke a similar sense of elegance and allure. However, some can argue that this advertisement reinforces prevailing gender ideologies in a male-dominated society. The model's appearance conforms to traditional beauty standards, tall, thin, white, with flawless skin, projecting an image of sensuality and confidence. The advertisement seems to appeal to the average upper-class affluent white women, potentially excluding other diverse audiences.

Reference:
Miller, K.

The ad features a captivating image of 'Miss' Natalie Portman, a beautiful young white woman at the center, gazing alluringly at the camera while holding a light pink rose in her mouth against a soft pink backdrop. The presence of the rose adds a sense of magnetism and invitation, with the light pink color symbolizing happiness, joy, grace, femininity, and esteem (McCammon, 2016). Notably, she is depicted sitting backward in a chair, a posture associated with "cool" people rather than traditional ladylike behavior. The text "Miss Dior" beneath the photo reinforces the perception of the model as a youthful, unmarried, and very feminine individual, exuding charm and sexiness.

The camera focuses on her face, highlighting her wispy hair and subtle natural makeup, which align with the overall soft and feminine theme of the ad. This advertisement appears tailored to appeal to their ideal clientele which seems to be the young, unmarried, and feminine women seeking a sexy and attractive scent. However, critics can argue that the ad reflects the traditional white male-dominated ideology and expectations of what the ideal attractive young woman should look like a cool, sexy, natural, and quintessential girl-next-door type. Which 'Miss' Portman's persona is known for.

Reference:
McCammon, E. (2016, November 1). 11 Rose Color Meanings to Help You Pick the Perfect Bouquet.

In this ad, Johnny Depp exudes a masculine, tattooed, and rugged charm, embodying his well-known bad-boy persona. The backdrop, resembling a dry field in the wilderness or desert, contributes to the perception of barrenness, wildness, and masculinity. He is seen wearing a collared, black button-up shirt paired with black slacks and silver, turquoise, and wood-toned jewelry. Johnny is standing confidently towards the camera, gaze fixating on the horizon while rolling up his sleeves, adding to the mysterious allure of the scene and evoking a sense of readiness for hard labor.

The black outfit he wears cleverly mirrors the color of the cologne bottle in the right-hand corner, establishing a strong visual connection between the two. The accessories he wears possibly pay homage to his Native American heritage, as turquoise and wood tones are often associated with Native American culture (Sharanya, 2023) and Native Americans are typically associated with the word "wild". (Dunbar-Ortiz et al, 2016) Boldly written across his chest, the word "Sauvage" is found, a French term meaning "savage, wild, not tamed, or natural," as per the Cambridge dictionary.

Dior's choice of Johnny Depp for this advertisement is strategic, as he embodies a captivating, wild, and sexy persona that aligns with the message they wish to convey. Their target audience appears to be middle-aged males, appealing to the stereotypical view of a masculine man being strong, confident, hard-working, and enigmatic. Clearly, the advertisers intended to portray this as a cologne for the manly man.

Reference:
Cambridge Dictionary. (2023, August 2). sauvage.
