Ori Gersht was born in Israel in 1967, but has lived in London for over 30 years. Throughout his career his work has been concerned with the relationships between history, memory and landscape. He often adopts a poetic, metaphorical approach to explore the difficulties of visually representing conflict and violent events or histories.

Gersht approaches this challenge not simply through his choice of imagery, but by pushing the technical limitations of photography, questioning its claim to truth. Frequently referencing art history, Gersht's imagery is uncannily beautiful; the viewer is visually seduced before being confronted with darker and more complex themes, presenting a compulsive tension between beauty and violence. This has included an exploration of his own family’s experiences during the Holocaust, a series of post-conflict landscapes in Bosnia and a celebrated trilogy of slow-motion films in which traditional still lives explode on screen.

Removed all of the image apart from face by applying mask to face, inverting and then reducing exposure. Final 1:1 crop.

Final 16:9 crop and remove of all the image other than head.

Edited in both Lightroom and Photoshop to enhance reflection and shade as well as composition.

Unit 2 CHECK-LIST

1)  add PowerPoint of the photographers we studied/ Research artists/photographers (at least 3) that have created similar work – add examples

2) create images inspired by one of the photographers Ideally, you will need to do 3 test shoots (take lots of photographs from each experiment with composition/lighting

3) Add images to the Facebook group for feedback, or ask family and friends

4) Final Shoot – add at least 6 images that you are happy

5)Write a short self-evaluation on what you enjoyed or if you would do the project again what would you do differently, and add to your unit

6) Complete the front sheet of unit 2 (Orange colour) cross-referencing where evidence can be found for each learning outcome

7) Add your feedback

Optional Unit CHECK-LIST

2) Mind-map ideas (onto an A3 piece of paper) photograph when complete and add to your padlet – a few short sentences on why you choose your idea
3) Research ideas (Pinterest) – create a moodboard (print off photographers that have inspired

4) Research artists/photographers (at least 3) that have created similar work – add examples

Ideally, you will need to do 3 test shoots (take lots of photographs from each experiment with composition/lighting

5) Photograph the lighting set-ups that you are using to create your still-life, and add them to your Unit 1 ( annotate with descriptions of what lights you have used)

6) Add images to the Facebook group for feedback, or ask family and friends

8)Write a short self-evaluation on what you enjoyed or if you would do the project again what would you do differently, and add to your unit

9) Complete the front sheet of the optional unit of your choice  (Orange colour) cross-referencing where evidence can be found for each learning outcome

Where needed add health and safety and risk documents to your padlets, and complete the additional qualification!
