I find some irony in thinking about those advisor approaches to working with their advisees particularly in regard to those who do so-called "critical" work. People can still have different roles and responsibilities within those institutions, and that doesn't mean that those of us entering a field or learning about an unfamiliar topic don't want others with experience or knowledge to share that with us.
