Indiana had 4 amazing teachers attend JNCL this year, representing HS, Higher Ed, and Retired. We were able to see representatives in both Senator's Offices as well as in 4 Congressional Offices with one meeting postponed due to a fire drill. Senator Young is leading the charge on reauthorizing Title VI and Senator Braun joined the America's Languages Caucus! We are very excited about this.
Locally we have killed a bill that would limit teaching of DEI initiatives under the guise of CRT. We have one more week of our legislative session so we are just hoping that it stays dead.
We are also working to redo the language around our Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency (Seal of Biliteracy) as the English proficiency requirements are set to a test that we no longer offer.

During LAD, FLAM was fortunate to have teachers who serve as SoBL coordinators, and in IB, Heritage programs, teacher preparation, and language policy. French, German, Spanish and ESL were represented. We met with staffers from our representatives and senators, and had engaged conversations with them about the legislative asks; they showed interest in each issue. We have had follow-up e-mails since. We enjoyed working with other state WL leaders and have meaningful conversations about successes, challenges, and strategies in advocating for languages.

Within our association, our advocacy work has progressed. We are creating an Advocacy Tool Box to provide to our members via our association website; this will include letter and e-mail templates and ideas for events and advocacy actions related to WL in schools, in addition to our anti-racism and SoBL resources. We have added an Advocacy Request Form to gather more efficiently the information needed for responses. We have two new focus groups started, one for advocacy and one related to meeting the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students. We have also created new Vision and Mission statements, and our President, Haydee Taylor-Arnold has made some progress with our state department of education about revising our CLEs.
