Forgiveness and acceptance is used when Lori lets Rex and Rose Mary move in with her even after they did not help her through her whole childhood. After they follow their kids to New York and move in with Lori, she soon finds it difficult with both not following what Lori asked and soon went back to their old lifestyle. Rose mary cluttered the house with all her street finds and paintings, and Rex who Lori soon couldn't handle came home every night drunk. With Lori not being able to handle Rex, Brian took him into his house also showing forgiveness and acceptance after going through the same struggles brought to them by the parents. This photo represents it by the children hugging as an act of forgiveness to their parents letting them stay with them.

Resilience and survival is used by all the kids saving up money to try to escape their parents and move to New York. Working for this money the kids are needing to support themselves showing their resilience and survival to live with no help from their parents. The walls siblings built a very strong bond to help one another through the very difficult circumstances Rose Mary and Rex put them in. Their resilience helps them defeat their obstacles and eventually they escape the poor environment they were in. This photo represents it by the hand( the parents) leaving the plant(children) on its own to grow and survive by themselves with no support from them.

When the food stamps were brought up to help support the family when living in West Virginia. Rose Mary refused to accept them saying "we do not need charity and should not rely on others." Even with the family's poor financial situation and struggling to put food on the table for everyone would have helped and should have been accepted. The reason they had declined these helpful actions is because Rose mary, and Rex are very pride filled which does not help the kids who starve. This photo represents poverty and class struggle by having the things they had declined( food stamps) which shows the class struggle the family is going through.

This part in the book showed the broken promises rex gave when stealing the money from the piggy bank(Oz)and not coming home for days leaving Lori and Jeannette waiting. Lori, furiously stayed up all night waiting for Rex to confront him. After three days of being gone, he finally gets home where Lori shouts "You bastard!" and continued to yell. This event occurred in part three, and was an act of betrayal for the children. This money was going to be used for the kids to run away to New York and escape the parents but with Rex slashing Oz open it set them back a very large amount. The photo relates to broken promises by the glass being broken just like Oz and not being able to be fixed physically and mentally with the trauma and worry it left on the kids.

Self-Reliance and Individualism is shown by the Walls children's journey and breaking free from their past and going onto build their own successful lives. Jeannette at a young age had applied and got the job at the jewelry store to financially support her family and rely on her income because of the little help her parents gave. Lori had many focuses with her education, and her artistic skills which she used to blur out her current home life. When Lori moved to New York she used these skills to pursue a career in art. Brian found ways to get money by collecting scrap metal and also taught himself how to fix different things around the house. The photo represents all of the children on their own because their parents had no help in their lives anc only relied on themselves basically being on their own.

Throughout the book, the father Rex talks about all these grand plans and ideas he is going to do. One idea rex fantasized is building a glass castle for the family which soon turned into reality never happening. With Rex talking about these plans and promises he will do it distracted the kids from their discomfort and struggles. The parents also had them bouncing from house to house which seemed cool at first to the kids but as age counted higher for the children they soon came to realization that the financial struggles caused this. The photo symbolizes this by showing the guy(Rex) on bottom luring the girl( the children down) then ultimately turning on them realizing all those promises were for nothing.
