Garvey acknowledges, “Whatever happens, you have changed here on the island” (207). This shows Cole has changed because Garvey knew how angry and defiant Cole was in the beginning when they first met. He has seen firsthand with his own eyes how different Cole is now.

Cole realized “He found himself blinking back tears as he told about the baby sparrows” (213). This tells us that Cole finally felt worried for something and actually cared for something in his whole entire life.

In the beginning Cole had beaten Peter up but now Cole is showing how much he's changed and wants to help peter.

When taking Peter and his parents around the island, “Cole led the way, explaining how soaking cleared his mind” (213). The soaking pond is where Cole was taken and taught how to control his anger. In the past, he had not been able to control his anger, and he didn't want to control it.

In the end, Cole admits to Peter, “I don’t think I’ll ever heal from what I did to you, but I’m sorry Peter” (237). The Cole Matthews from the beginning of the story would have never said sorry or admitted he had done wrong. This was a new attitude and behavior, showing Cole had changed from his old ways.
