The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins

I felt that the author of the book was trying very hard to be self conscious and not put any false information in the book, often going above and beyond to make sure that it is clear what the book isn't, and I think that this is one of the best qualities of the book. The fact that Dawkins chooses his words very carefully as not to confuse the reader and make sure that all of the information in the book is intuitive is refreshing to see (quite like Neil Tyson) and is appreciated. I personally like the connections Dawkins makes to the natural world and the interconnections he has going on between the different ideas and analogies about how genes are selfish. Overall, my first impressions are very promising and I expect to gain a better understanding of how genes function and how it relates to the natural world as I continue reading.

So far, Endurance is a pretty hard book to read. It's very easy to tell that it wasn't written recently, and also that it was written at a higher level than high school. Despite this, it shines when it comes to imagery and storytelling. I really got a good sense of the mood of the crew as the Endurance got stuck in the ice, and it provides a good image in my head of a vast, empty wasteland that slowly gets more barren and hopeless as the wildlife becomes more sparse and the sun begins to disappear as the arctic winter sets in.

My first impression of 1776 is that so far it is very descriptive, but narrated, and almost exclusively talking about the British. McCullough is using a lot of different quotes, from real people, which is cool because it brings in a lot of different outlooks on the situation. He tends to bring everything back to one main focus, however, which makes the reading enjoyable, and keeps you interested.

He uses a lot of imagery to help the reader create an image in their mind, even if they haven't seen it with their own eyes. The book is instead talking about different people within wall street that were all affected by the crash. While the book does cram a lot of information and events, it surprised me as it seems to be looking more at the humans/emotional side of the story rather than just the numbers. This keeps the story much more engaging, as we start off the starts as we following a man working for Lehman brothers trying to fight against economic downfall.

It is important to understand all of the towns history, but there is so much history that I didn't get a chance to fully start the book. The history that the book shares includes some personal background information on some key characters in the start up of the town, as well as some of the occupations in the town, the most popular being working in the oil refinery. H. G. Bissinger is doing well at giving the text voice, and making it more exciting than it really is.

Instead of being statistics or going right into the author´s story, the preface and first chapter sets the tone and feel of the book being serious, but also emotional. It gives a lot of weight to one side of the argument very effectively. An example is when it talks about the Case of Mark and Mary Wilsey and their son who had schizophrenia (along with the narrator´s son)

The absurd wealth, the complexity of action and scale of the consequences of the big banks are almost surreal. I am eager to read through this book through the eyes of Richard Fuld and Lehman brothers, as well as hopefully other characters on the street. Exciting, incredibly detailed, honest and soaked in real drama that goes on in the big banks, Too Big to Fail grants wonderful insight.

My first impression of the book was overall good. I feel like this book is going to have a lot of very emotional parts, but I look forward to reading more of it. I think that this book will help me understand a little bit more about the structure of North Korea, and what it is actually like to live there. This book has already made me feel sympathy for the main character. He has gone through so much, and none of his battles were easily conquerable. I know that this book will not be easy to read and accepts, and this book has already given me greater appreciation for the freedom I have.

Friday Night Lights By H.G. Bissinger

My first impression of this book was that it is really detailed and it goes through every emotion that a character is feeling. Reading through the preface and prologue is kind of hard to get into because of how it just describes the characters. However, when the author is describing the feeling that a character has, it feels like you know exactly what he is talking about because his word choice is so descriptive. The author describes what happens on a typical Friday night on the football field, and makes it more intense and emotional than you would first expect it to be.

My first impression of this book was how detailed the author got. It was a very sensitive topic for him to write about but he just went straight into detail and gave great imagery throughout the first chapter. Just by reading the first few pages you can tell by his tone and word choice this a dark and serious topic he has written about.

Complications has been a very fun book to read. The stories that comes from a surgeon's point of view are fascinating and the graphic imagery used to describe the procedures makes them engaging and interesting. Every time the surgeon has to do a procedure I can vividly imagine it in my head. This is not the only topic of the book though, it goes into many other things that aren't usually thought about such the imperfection of doctors and surgeons. They are expected to be perfect in every move like a machine.
