How can an English Learner’s home language be utilized to support and strengthen the development of foundational phonics in English?

Students can find cognate words in a reading, or words that similar in English and their home language. This works best for Latin based languages. Students can find the words that are similar and understand the similarities and differences in the pronunciation of the words to help understand phonics and sounds in English. It also helps for students to connect a word in English with the definition of the word in their language. This helps them to recognize and understand the meaning of the word while understanding how to pronounce it in a different language. While the pronunciation is different, the recognition of the definition and connection with the word in their home language helps the student remember the word in a different language and how to pronounce it.
